Downtown Delray isn’t quite the Casbah, but it’s looking a little more like it with the debut of Breathe (410 W. Atlantic Ave., 561/330-4526), a “Mediterranean fusion” restaurant, lounge and niteclub with an exotic, vaguely Middle Eastern vibe. Think swanky gold wallpaper, a VIP room with butler service, an outdoor patio with hookahs and a pair of DJs to keep the party going until early morning.

The menu wanders all over the Mediterranean, from clams or mussels with North African spices and tabouleh with grilled shrimp to bouillabaisse, porcini ravioli with sage butter sauce and lemon-infused chicken kabobs with tzatziki. If you’re not feeling especially Mediterranean, there’s also braised short ribs, Caesar salad and crabcakes.

Lunch is more typical salads and sammies and, of course, an upscale burger. If you have more energy than I do, you’ll be happy to note that the bar and lounge stay open until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. And if you love jazz like I do, you’ll be pleased to note they say live jazz will be coming sometime in the future.
