Virginia Woolf once said, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Foodies from all over the region will have a chance this Thursday not only to dine well but also to feast at the longest table in Florida.

As has been the case since its inception, the fourth annual Savor the Avenue in Delray Beach is generating all kinds of buzz. Eighteen local restaurants will participate in the sold-out event, which features a 1,361-foot-long table that runs directly down the middle of Atlantic Avenue. Diners have booked reservations with 32 East, Cabana el Rey, Carpe Diem by Café de France, Caffé Luna Rosa, City Oyster & Sushi Bar, Cut 432, GOL! The Taste of Brazil, La Cigale, Lemongrass, Max’s Harvest, Prime, SpoonFed, Sundy House, The Office, Tramonti, Tryst, Union and Vic & Angelo’s. In addition to the meals, diners will be treated to an impressive selection of wines, from Rutherford Ranch to Predator to Lander-Jenkins.

Five dollars of each ticket sold (prices ranged from $55 to $89) will benefit the Office Depot Foundation. One of the foundation’s core goals is to provide children with the right school supplies to succeed in their academic careers. To that end, diners at Savor the Avenue will find backpacks on the chairs that attendees and passersby can fill with school supplies. As of 2011, Office Depot had provided more than 2.5 million backpacks to underprivileged children.

A record 1,000-plus diners are expected to attend this year’s Savor, hosted by Boca Raton and Delray Beach magazines. In addition to the event’s sponsors (including the aforementioned wine companies, Xanté liqueur, Atlas Party Rental, JM Lexus and Delray Garden Center), city officials and hundreds of restaurant staffers help to make the night a success.

Not only must waiters serve guests along Atlantic Avenue at Savor, they also must tend to diners at their respective restaurants, which are open for business the night of the event. Regardless of the time and effort, the staff looks forward to the event. “Savor the Avenue is a great opportunity for people to taste food at our restaurant that they may not have had the privilege to do yet,” says Charles Rosa of Cut 432. “This event creates the opportunity for us to show what we offer.”
