North Federal Highway in Lantana is nobody’s idea of a tropical paradise, but it is getting a modest infusion of tropical spirit with the debut of Lantana Jack’s (308 N. Federal Hwy., 561/847-4158) a modern American café with a pronounced Caribbean twist.

Located in the old Lantana Ale House, the new Jack’s chef is Chris Palmer, who comes with a resume that includes stints at Café Boulud with Zach Bell, the short-lived Taste Gastropub with Allen Susser, and more recently at Fort Lauderdale’s beer-centric Tap 42.

The menu doesn’t break any culinary ground but it does hit all the popular bases, with a raw bar featuring peel ‘n’ eat shrimp and white wine-steamed mussels, a selection of burgers, and other dishes ranging from rock shrimp mac ‘n’ cheese and guava barbecued pulled pork to conch and shrimp fritters and jerk chicken wings. There’s also white chocolate-pistachio bread pudding for dessert, which sounds pretty tempting.
