I’ve been meaning to stop by this cute little eatery in The Moorings condo complex for weeks and I finally got around to it last week. . . now I’m sorry I didn’t get there sooner.
The Cheese & Wine Café (802 N. Dixie Hwy., 561/585-0123) is Judy Hidalgo’s baby, the first foray into the restaurant business for this former New York high school and graduate school teacher with absolutely no dining-hospitality background. No matter, the café is a sweet little place, done up in sea green and earth-toned tiles, with heavy white marble tables indoors and chic wicker tables and chairs under canvas umbrellas on the brick-paved patio facing the street.
Dishes are simple and inexpensive but made to order with high-quality ingredients. There are a handful of salads named after artists, a roster of artful sandwiches (from a tender chicken salad with raisins, green apple and pine nuts to a heartier number with Serrano ham, manchego, tomatoes and tapenade), plus rice bowls with assorted veggies and proteins, breakfast dishes, cheese and meat boards, and desserts.
A small but well-thought selection of wines is available, running the gamut from the excellent every-day wines of Jean-Luc Colombo to the exquisite Olive Hill Cabernet of Sonoma’s B.R. Cohn. And, of course, there’s coffee, espresso, lattes and the like. Oh, and a small retail market, with domestic and imported cheeses, the superlative Iberico ham and various condiments (the ginger-pear butter from American Spoon is terrific).
