Never a dull moment at The Mexican. . . er, what used to be The Mexican, the one-time paean to restaurateur Dennis Max’s memories of Mexican cookery by way of Southern California. First, Max split from the Royal Palm Place restaurant, citing the usual “differences in philosophy” with his partners. Then they split, and last weekend the new owners threw a Grand Opening party for what is now 101 Cantina (133 SE Mizner Blvd., 561/300-5280), a sibling to the wildly popular Gainesville parent. The new Cantina seems to be aimed at the party-hearty “younger crowd;” it should be interesting to see how that plays out in the mostly upscale Royal Palm Place shopping complex.
If you go Rah! Rah! Rah! for raw foods, you’ll be pleased to know that West Palm’s highly regarded vegetarian-vegan-raw foodist Darbster will open a second location in the old Boca Bar & Grill space on North Federal Highway in Boca Raton. I don’t have any more details than that, but when I do I’ll get right back to you.
No such good news, however, about Rosso Italia, the gorgeously contemporary Italian eatery next door to (and run by the same folks as) the terrific Red the Steakhouse. I loved the sleek, chic Milan design studio look of the place, though the food, which did have its moments, never seemed to quite reach the same heights as the décor. According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the Red Restaurant Group will “look for new Rosso locations across the US.” Just not in frightfully obscure locations in Boca Raton. . .
And my spies tell me there are some good and inexpensive eats at the newish Nana’s Diner (1230 N. Military Trail, 561/640-2922) in West Palm Beach. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and until midnight Fridays and Saturdays), Nana’s boasts an extensive menu that ranges from eggs, waffles and French toast to lunch and dinner selections that include Mexican, Italian, Greek and all-American dishes. The huge, gut-busting gyros, old-fashioned shakes and floats, and killer cheery pie are particularly good. So check ‘em out.
