We can start 2013 with a renewed sense of health and desire to become as healthy as possible. We can also support and invest in the people and institutions in our community who help to see to it that we get the best care possible, should problems arise.

Many local health care facilities and organizations are gearing up for their seasonal fundraisers. Among those:

The American Cancer Society – South Palm Beach Chapter is having its Hope Gala, starting 6:30 p.m., Saturday, March 9, at Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton.

All proceeds will benefit R.O.C.K. (Reaching out to Cancer Kids) Camp. Located in Eustis, Fla., which is about 40 miles northwest of Orlando, R.O.C.K. is Florida’s first and only residential camp for children with cancer, according to Jamie Lober, public relations chairman for the Cancer Society’s local chapter.

Lober says R.O.C.K. Camp serves youth ages 7 to 16 years, who are referred by pediatric oncologists and are or were being treated for cancer.

“Aside from the traditional camp experience and its benefits of socialization, fun, learning and adventure, parents can feel reassured knowing that their kids will be with full-time medical professionals…, including resident pediatric oncologists and nurses,” Lober says. “The more money we raise, the more kids that will get to go to camp. To apply for camp, you can go to www.boggycreek.org.”

Tickets for the Hope Gala are $250 per person. For more information about tickets or sponsorships, contact Ellen Vaughan, unit executive director, at (561)-394-7751 ext. 5308, or ellen.vaughan@cancer.org.
