Sign up for a local race. Why not?

I’ll dangle a carrot, and you decide whether you want to bite. Signing up for a race gives you a goal and a baseline. You do this one, and see how it goes. If you like it, you can try to improve for future races. There are a few local races coming up. One is a run; the other a triathlon.

The Motivation Man Mini Triathlon in Boca Raton

Where: Countess de Hoernle Park: 1370 Spanish River Blvd.

When: Sept. 22

Be prepared to do these events in this order: a 500-yard swim in the lake, 11-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run.  The distance is a great way to break into the sport because it’s slightly shorter than the sprint distance triathlon.

Start time is 7:15 a.m., but athletes have to arrive at the park by 6:45 a.m. Registration is $75.20 (which includes a signup fee).

Boca Raton race promoter and CEO of Game On Sports Marketing Group Steve Tebon advertises a festive and fun atmosphere, complete with a high-energy DJ, Top 40 music and live entertainment.

The Boca Raton Road Runners’ 34th annual Boca 5K and 10K race

Where: Along A1A, starting at 3600 N. Ocean Blvd.

When: Dec. 29

This is one of my favorite local running races. It’s a nice course.

Race start is 7:30 a.m. The cost to enter this race gets higher the longer you wait to sign up. As of Aug. 14, sign up is $25, whether you’re running the 5K or 10k distance. You’ll pay less if you’re a member of the Boca Raton Road Runners.

This year’s charity partner is the Boca Raton Firefighter & Paramedic Benevolent Fund, which is currently raising money for The Children’s Burn Foundation of Florida, Inc.’s annual Burn Camp. This non-profit organization is dedicated to addressing the needs of children who have suffered severe burn injuries.

There’s talk of adding a new feature to race--a “Fitness Challenge.” But details aren’t out yet. Check the http://www.boca5k10k.com website for updates.

Happy racing. Feel free to share your racing stories as comments for this blog.
