Fourth of July weekend means plenty of fireworks in the sky—and a few fires on the grill (depending on who's cooking). For some of us, it's also an excuse to feast on a slurpy slice (or two) of watermelon. And why not? In the wrong hands, watermelon can be hazardous to a clean shirt, but it also has all sorts of health-related benefits. For example:
• Watermelon is high in bloat-reducing potassium.
• It's low in calories (1 cup is only 46 calories).
• It's a good source of lycopene, which helps with heart health and cancer prevention.
• And it's a fast-moving food, which is great for internal body cleansing.
Here's a few Z-related watermelon recipes to juice up your holiday weekend.
Preparation: Juice watermelon, honeydew and cucumbers through a juicer. Squeeze lime by hand. Serve on the rocks for a refreshing beverage.
1 Cup Blueberries
Preparation: Use a melon scooper or a measuring spoon to scoop out the meat of the melons (ball-shapred). For a video demo, check out this eHow.com video.
4 cups of Boston lettuce, chopped
4 cups of watermelon, cubed
2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
Preparation: Mix all the ingredients together and drizzle with the balsamic vinegar before serving.
