Banjoists Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn have mastered the deceptively intricate art of the duet. Their performances embrace a diversity almost unthinkable – coming from just two banjos and one voice. Washburn’s beguiling composing, playing and singing blend with Fleck’s riveting and virtuosic musicianship to create music both unique yet familiar in texture. Fleck, a 15 – time Grammy winner, has collaborated with Chick Corea, Oumou Sangare, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Dave Matthews, Earl Scruggs, and the entire Cleveland Orchestra for his Banjo Concert ‘The Impostor’.

Distinguished Lecture Series

The Society is pleased to present a lecture by archaeologist and author Dr. Jerald Milanich, who will present “Frolicking Bears, Wet Vultures, and Other Oddities: A Nineteenth-Century Journalist in East-Central Florida,” based on his book. A reception and book signing will be held following the lecture on the museum floor (2nd floor).

Books will be on sale In 1873 and 1874 the New York Sun, famed for its editorial “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,” published a series of articles recounting Amos Jay Cummings’ journeys through north and east Florida. At the time, Cummings, a Sun journalist and author of the articles, was among only a handful of white people who had made their way down the east coast to stand on the sunset drenched shores of Lake Worth. Today it is among the most expensive properties in the state.

Princess Grace: Her Movies, Her Men, Her Monaco

Breaking away from a stringent family of means to pursue an acting career was the first of many triumphs in a life that deemed Grace Kelly true aristocracy – from Philadelphia society to Hollywood stardom to European royalty – her final role as that of Her Serene Highness, Princess of Monaco. Join Lee Wolf and Steven Caras in a revealing conversation through which the real Grace Kelly emerges – an icy-eyed, hot-blooded icon who pulled those signature white gloves over many an eye during the naïve 1950s when one assumed all girls from ‘good’ families were in fact, good girls. Sponsored by Leona F. Chanin.

Tickets are $75.
