Another year, another successful Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon hosted by the Junior League of Boca Raton. This is the 30th year the Junior League has been putting on this event; What an incredible tradition that keeps getting bigger and better every year.

Ah, what a fun day celebrating and honoring the most charitable women of South Florida. Being with these women at the luncheon, we were truly inspired to do better and be better in the hopes that we can impact the community as much as they have.

A huge congratulations to this year’s Woman Volunteer of the Year winner, Joyce DeVita, of the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum! After 30 years of celebrating the charitable women of South Florida, it made perfect sense that Joyce DeVita would be honored as this year’s WVOY.

With cities out there like Boston, Charleston and Savannah it’s easy to overlook how much history we have right here in Boca Raton, but thanks to the Boca Raton Historical Society and Museum, we’re constantly learning about our city’s unique past. The purpose of the BRHS is to collect, preserve and present information and artifacts relevant to the past and evolving history of Boca Raton and to maintain a visible role in education and advocacy of historic preservation in our community. Bravo Joyce DeVita!

In addition to recognizing Boca Raton’s finest, we got a little socializing in as well. We mixed and mingled at the Boca Raton Resort & Club  with some of our favorite “blogger/influencer friends,” Heather McMechan from Local Mom Scoop, Shaina Wizov from Take a Bite Out of Boca, Melanie De Vito from The Addison and Dana Peller from Pellerini, to name a few! We also had the honor of sitting in the front row for lunch and the Cinq à Sept runway show (presented by Saks Fifth Avenue, Boca Raton) with our friends at Bocamag.com.

A huge thank you and congratulations to our friends Jena LaMendola and Reilly Glasser, the public relations co-chairs of the Junior League of Boca Raton, for continuing the tradition of a successful WVOY Luncheon.

Lilly, Jane Siskin and Lindsey.

Lilly, Jane Siskin and Lindsey.

One of the highlights for us was being one of the four media outlets to meet and interview Jane Siskin, the face and designer behind Cinq à Sept. After watching her runway show during the luncheon, we noticed her use of eclectic fabrics and fashion-forward styles that are trendy, but still speak to the professional women of Boca Raton. Here are some of our favorite looks of the day.

Jane’s inspiration stems from traveling, research, sculptures and architecture. The collection we viewed during the WVOY luncheon was inspired by her trip to Italy, but she will always say that Paris is her true inspiration behind the brand itself.

“Cinq à Sept is inspired by the hours between 5 and 7 p.m., when city streets are awash in the warm glow of the vanishing sun and office desks are abandoned for cocktails and as-yet unknown possibilities, Cinq à Sept embodies a deliberate balance between sophistication and ease, youthful daring and confident allure.” – Official description from Cinq à Sept.

As you can see, this designer is the ideal fashion sponsor for an event that celebrates women.

Thank you again to the Junior League of Boca Raton for hosting such a wonderful event that encourages women of all ages to do good for the community year after year!

How to Boca-fy Your Fall Wardrobe and Other Season Must-Haves

With the recent onslaught of rain and wind, the approach of Halloween and the nationwide obsession with spiced gourd products (pumpkin spice deodorant is, unfortunately, on the market), I think it’s finally time to get serious about my fall wardrobe.

As a South Floridian born and reared, I own a few sweaters and jackets (all also a few years old). I have one pair of boots and fewer than five long-sleeved shirts. I am often either too hot or too cold on any given day in the fall.

Deborahjamesboutique

So I talked with Deborah Shuart, owner of Deborah James, a contemporary women’s clothing store in Royal Palm Place in Boca Raton and Las Olas, on what to wear this season. The store’s selection is directly influenced by Deborah’s trips to New York, Milan, Paris and LA during fashion week and countless hours of product research. Here’s some advice she had—after 30 years in business in Boca—along with the must-haves of the fall 2017 season.

Shine

AGL-boot

Sequined boots by AGL.

“Everything is very shiny right now,” she says. “It’s very good for Boca because we’re so glitzy.”

You’ll see everything from sequined jacket sleeves to ornamented boots. Sparkle and shine on shoes is particularly popular. Another thing: “The sneaker is the huge story this season,” Deborah says.

Athleisure

Athleisure by Tee Lab.

Athleisure by Tee Lab.

This trend is here to stay. Layer lightweight hoodies and athletic fabrics under jackets and sweaters for effortless comfort and spot-on style.

Yes velvet!

Velvet dress by Raquel Allegra.

Velvet dress by Raquel Allegra.

When I met Deborah at her store, she was wearing the cutest tie-dyed ocean-blue dress EVER with booties. On first glance, I assumed the dress was cotton, but it was smooth, silky velvet. Velvet is coming out in the daytime this season—and can be worn from morning into the evening.

“I always call it ‘fake fall,’” Deborah explains. In Florida, we can get away with wearing fall colors and adding texture all while staying comfortable in Florida fabrics. She’s not saying to wear a velvet tracksuit. Pick a short-sleeved velvet dress or shirt in a fall color, and you’ve made it.

Beauty booty

Boot cut pants from Avenue Montaigne.

Boot pants are back in! And Deborah says that in Paris, high-waisted jeans are EVERYWHERE. Combine them.

That’s so 2016

So that I don’t totally give myself away as a fashion failure, I asked Deborah what’s going out of style. Of course, personal style is just that, personal, and you can wear whatever you want whenever you want. But some things are truly past their prime. The bomber jacket was huge, and it’s finally stepping off the pedestal and back into the closet. Bomber, make way for the blazer.

I also wanted to know what should be a wardrobe staple. Cropped jeans have been in stores and runways for a while now, but Deborah says it’s an essential addition to any wardrobe. Rippy cropped jeans (light washes are popular now) pair perfectly with booties, slouchy sweaters, basically anything.

R13 cropped jeans.

R13 cropped jeans.

Deborah is cool. And everything in Deborah James is cool. Much cooler than the way I currently dress, but not too eccentric or high fashion as to be inaccessible. As Deborah likes to say, her store is for everyone. She recently had four generations of one family come to the store at once, and everyone (except the baby) found something. The key to nailing Boca style: create a luxury casual look with fine fabrics and lightweight leathers.

About Deborah:

Deborah’s father, James (hence the store’s name), was a menswear manufacturer in New York City, and fashion has always been a part of her life. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked her way up at Burdines, moving from New York to Miami. When she wanted to start a family, she realized the corporate world didn’t have time for her three children, so she opened her own store in 1987. Deborah James is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, with special events throughout October.

You know that time, right after work but before dinner, when restaurants start lighting candles and the sun gives off that golden light? When you leave work just a little early on a Friday to catch happy hour?

We know you know it, and at this year’s Junior League of Boca Raton Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon, you’ll see looks inspired by those precious hours by designer Jane Siskin,Cinq à Sept Founder and CEO. Saks Fifth Avenue Boca Raton will join JLBR as the fashion sponsor of the 30th annual luncheon at the Boca Raton Resort & Club to produce a big-city, high-energy runway show. Here’s a bit of Cinq à Sept’s Fall 2017 collection:

Each year the Junior League honors community members and nominates outstanding women who are making a difference as volunteers for their nonprofits at the Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon. This year there are a whopping 42 nominees, all of whom were announced at a kick-off event at Saks at Town Center mall on Wednesday.

The winner of the title will be awarded at this year’s luncheon, which takes place on Oct. 5. Last year’s Woman Volunteer of the Year was Susan Welchel, a member of the Junior League her entire adult life and former two-term mayor of Boca Raton. The JLBR is dedicated to improving the community by training volunteers, taking action and supporting women in the process.

As longtime media sponsors of the WVOY Luncheon, we’ve seen countless women get the recognition they deserve for their community work. Of course, we don’t know who will win this year, and really, they’re all winners.

Like those precious hours between 5 and 7 p.m., you never quite know what’s going to happen at the WVOY luncheon. But you know it’ll be a great time.

It’s time for one of our favorite South Florida events out there, the Shuzz Art Fashion Show.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience this event, you can now! This year, the Shuzz Art Fashion Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, with a runway show by Miami-born designer Patricia Gomez Gracia of Gomez-Gracia that features Jimmy Choo. Bachelor nation fans (we know you’re out there), get excited because the night will be hosted by Ryan Beckett from ABC’s The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise.

Shuzz Fund (pronounced “shoes”—if you haven’t already guessed) is a nonprofit organization that provides new shoes to children living in impoverished areas across America and in developing countries around the world. All donations and 100 percent of the event’s ticket sales go toward Shuzz’s programs and aid efforts centered around distributing shoes to kids in need regardless of race, religion or class.

So, what can you expect this year at the Shuzz Art Fashion Show? In addition to the runway show, the event will feature a 40-foot-long red carpet for all guests, a cocktail party and VIP reception sponsored by Celebrity Cruises, and silent and live auctions.

“We are so grateful to have the support of our entire community who is purchasing tickets at a record rate. If you have yet to buy yours, make sure you do so quickly… you do not want to miss SHUZZ | ART | FASHION no7!” said Rita Lombardo, the founder and president of Shuzz Fund, in a press statement.

Not only does this event benefit an amazing cause, it’s also one of the events of the year—a see and be seen opportunity, if you will. You won’t want to miss it! Show and ticket information can be purchased here.

The Shuzz Fund aims to provide new shoes to 10 million children in impoverished areas internationally over the next 10 years. So far Shuzz has distributed 101,500 shoes, according to its website.

College Football Season Approaches! Tailgate in Style With Stadium Standout Looks

Bows and Arrows2

As sad as we are to kiss the summer months goodbye, we’re just as excited to start planning our outfits for college football season.

Yes, your LLScene girls LOVE football season. So much so that we might be strategizing a little too early, but you can never be too prepared. This will give you plenty of time to plan accordingly. Even if you can’t make every game, you still want to look stylish and put together when you go to the bar or a friend’s house to watch the games on TV.

We are giving you style options for every age demographic that will be sure to put you in the category of a true “stadium standout” this season, no matter what Florida team you cheer for.

Florida Atlantic University

Let’s start local. Year after year, FAU’s football program continues to grow, and this year is expected to be bigger than ever. With the expansion of their team, staff and resources, it’s just a matter of time until FAU is on the map with other elite football programs in the state. Pick your signature color from red, white and blue. Run with that color and accessorize around it.

Regardless of whether the team wins or loses, you can tailgate in style this season with some of these local South Florida looks.

Lindsey is a Florida State alum, so this is always one of our favorite categories. Even if you’re not a die-hard FSU fan, the “garnet and gold” style can be pulled off easily. FSU style can come in all shapes, sizes and colors. For example, you can easily substitute maroon for the color garnet. You won’t have any trouble finding maroon pieces in fall. And add gold into your look with shiny accessories! Think boho: arrows, feathers, headbands, etc. All of those themes will apply when cheering on the Seminoles.

UF girls sure know how to tailgate in fashion. We’ve been to many a Gator game and can attest to this, as painful as it may be to admit. Royal blue and bright orange are challenging colors, but somehow they pull it off. Lucky for them, Gainesville is filled with boutiques that bring fashionable alternatives to college gameday. Lucky for you, these boutiques also have online stores. Here are some of our favorite gameday Gator looks.

Can we call you the lucky ones? Black and gold. There are women that dream of a world where they can always wear black, and you ladies get to all season long. Gone are the days of logo tees. Watch the game in style with sundresses, maxi dresses, rompers, shorts, tanks and tops—you can find them all in black. University of Miami fans have it a little easier than UF fans, simply because you can do a lot more with the color green. It’s okay to go off track from the color scheme of your team, but still stay in the color family, which is what you’ll see below. We don’t love the bright green and orange colors of UM, but we can live with the different shades of those colors.

Tortuga Time! Lilly Pulitzer Designs Print Inspired by Local Sea Turtle

Lilly release 2017_selfie

Sometimes, one special animal can inspire true artistry. Think of William Wegman and his first wiemaraner Man Ray that inspired the most well-known work from the artist.

Lilly, a rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle, had that special something.

It had been a long journey for Lilly—named after the fashion house Lilly Pulitzer. Last October she was discovered with a deep, festering wound on her carapace. For more than six months, the employees at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach carefully nursed her back to life, using an array of treatments to heal her body: antibiotics, laser therapy, hydrotherapy and even good ole honey.

When she was finally ready to be released back into the wild in May, dozens of people gathered in Juno Beach to watch her return to the ocean. Among the wide-eyed spectators was 42-year-old Kelly Ring, who says her eyes became misty when the marine animal disappeared beneath the sparkling waves.

“I have been to several turtle releases. They are all special in their own right, but Lilly girl’s was especially touching,” Ring says. “It’s hard not to shed a tear when they hit the ocean.”

It was during Lilly’s gradual progress at the turtle hospital that she charmed Ring and scores of other locals. She even caught the eye of representatives from Lilly Pulitzer, one of the most iconic Palm Beach brands, and a partner of the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

They were so inspired by the turtle’s triumphant return to the briny ocean that the fashion house commissioned a new print for turtle-adorned apparel. On top of celebrating her return to the wild, a percentage of the new print’s sales will go toward helping the staff at the nonprofit Loggerhead Marinelife Center with its conservation efforts, specifically in caring for injured turtles and funding education and research initiatives.

It’s all part of Lilly Pulitzer’s Print with Purpose initiative, which seeks to use fashion as a vehicle for positive change.

The new sea turtle design, called Tortuga Time, is now the company’s second Print with Purpose pattern to be released. The first under this pay-it-forward program was Jungle Hoppin. Released in April, a portion of its sales went toward the Rainforest Alliance.

“Inspiration for our second Print with Purpose came easy—we’ve learned so much about sea turtles from our friends at Loggerhead Marinelife Center and got to know a very special turtle, Lilly, over the past year,” a brand spokesperson tells Boca. “Lilly print inspiration often comes from the ocean and favorite critters, however, this one is very near and dear to our heart.”

Ring, who believes Lilly’s return to the ocean was a “true success story,” says she is excited about the new print. “I plan to be at the store when it hits the shelves,” she says. Ring is a Lilly Pulitzer enthusiast, and she attended the Lilly Pulitzer Beach Bash in January.

The print is featured on a romper, shift dress, T-shirt, popover jacket, maxi dress and a dress for children. The pattern, of course, includes a turtle shell design, as well as seagrass and intricate shells, and the primary color is aqua green with splashes of navy blue, lime green and primrose pink. It is iconically Lilly—bright, nautical and feminine.  Depending on the piece, the clothing may comprise textured rayon, cotton jersey, flat French terry or rayon spandex.

You can buy Lilly Pulitzer clothes with the Tortuga Time print on Loggerhead Marinelife Day, Sat. Aug 19, at The Gardens Mall. According to mall’s event page, 10 percent of Lilly Pulitzer sales will be given back to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center that day.

“There is no better marriage than Lilly and turtles,” says Ring, urging locals to buy Tortuga Time apparel. “Purchasing this print just solidifies the good work of both the [sea turtle] hospital and the philanthropic heart of this great company. Lilly herself would be tickled pink about this union.”

9 Fire Designers We Loved at Miami Swim Week 2017

miami swim week

It was quite the scene last weekend at Miami Swim Week, and LLScene was there to make sure we reported back on the latest trends in designer swimwear for bocamag.com.

In addition to the runway shows, we also attended the ESCAPE Miami Swim event. We partnered with Face2Face Studios on a “bestie Scene Swag giveaway” as their amazing stylists braided hair and manned the lash bar. As we mentioned in our pre-event coverage, ESCAPE Miami Swim is one of our favorite events simply because of the shopping we do. Year after year we leave this event with statement pieces and looks we still obsess over today. Noteworthy boutiques at the event were Please Don’t Tell BoutiqueIndieSwimPoema Swim, and (we gotta brag a bit!) Scene Swag.

On to the shows! All we have to say is that the 2018 swimwear collections hitting boutiques and department stores this year will not disappoint. One of the best parts about Swim Week this year were the inclusion of plus-size models who debuted their designers’ collections. There’s nothing better than seeing a beautiful girl of any size hit the runway with all the confidence and poise in the world. Not only do curvy models represent a huge portion of women worldwide, showing styles on plus-sized models gives buyers a chance to see the swimwear on women who represent most of their clientele. Why this is only just now starting to gain traction in the fashion world blows our minds.

Funkshion SW

Lindsey Swing and Lilly Robbins livin’ it up at FUNKSHION.

Each year FUNKSHION’s operation of swim week gets better and better because of its ongoing commitment to showcase noteworthy designers—but more importantly, feature new and emerging designers. In today’s full recap, we’ll be sharing some of our favorite swim designers and trends we saw dominate the runway at Miami Swim Week.

Versakini

Woohoo, go Kelsey! As mentioned in our last post, the owner of Versakini, Kelsey Duffy, is a friend of ours. Not only is she a friend, but we are true supporters and fans of her growing brand. Everyone can become a party animal during swim week, and Versakini proved that during the premier of its 2018 collection at the WET Deck of the W South Beach. Duffy is known for her asymmetrical plunging necklines and convertible swimwear. This Shark Tank alumni has a brand that has evolved into sophisticated prints and convertible bikinis, one pieces and coverups. Here are some of our favorites.

Lila Nikole

Saturday night had the fever when Lila Nikole took over the runway to debut its technicolor chroma collection. This show was unlike a lot of the other shows we attended because of the vision behind it all. We were taken back to old school South Beach with all the vibrancy the MIA strip had to offer. A marinade of multi color kaleidoscope, floral, and neon digital prints popped off the runway on the curvaceous bikini-clad models to the beats of a live DJ. One of our favorite parts about the show was the mommy and me and daddy and me paired suits. Who doesn’t want to match with their little ones, while looking stylish doing it? Enjoy!

Prey Swim by Audrina Patridge

We’ve always been fans of Audrina Patridge since her days on MTV’s “The Hills,” so we were stoked to see the launch of her new line, Prey Swim. Patridge has always had a sense of style we identify with, so we knew we were in for a treat. Her first collection was complete with emerging swim trends like golds, metallics, high-waisted bottoms and gingham patterns, and Patridge took full advantage of all body types to show the versatility of her line.

Mia Marcelle

Always one of our favorites! Mia Marcell’s 2018 collection fully embraced the “sleeves on swim” trend, and we loved everything about it. Sure, this trend might be hard to pull off under day to day beach circumstances when your main objective is to tan, but if you have a girls trip planned or even a casual BBQ, this look can be achieved by pairing it with a pair of coverup bottoms, like a maxi skirt. We also noticed our favorite 2017 Pantone colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, make an welcome appearance. Look out for those colors when shopping this year; they’re here to stay.

Duskii

Duskii’s 2018 collection speaks to our sporty girls—we know you’re out there! These suits are perfect for the girl who loves a day of fishing out on the boat, but also loves a little fashion. The detailing on these suits is intricate and flattering, and the styles hug your curves in all the right places. You’ll never have to worry about falling out of your suit again because YOU ARE IN THERE. You’ll feel secured but not suffocated. In addition to the women’s line, Duskii has an adorable line for the kids, complete with matching floaties! How cute is that?!
