Healthy Heart 10K and 5K Run Will Get Your Heart Pumping

iStock_000003124146XLarge

It’s almost time to lace up for the Saturday, Feb. 25 Healthy Heart 10K (6.2 mile) or 5K (3.1 mile) Run in Boca Raton.

Start time for both distances is 7:15 a.m. at Spanish River Park. The courses will take runners along scenic A1A.

There will be free parking the morning of the race. And runners can hang out after the race to not only claim their trophies but also enjoy food, refreshments and a bounce house for kids. Kids can compete in a free kids’ run (ages one to eight years) starting at 8:30 a.m.

The cost to run the 10K is $30 through February 20 and $35 after. The 5K costs $25 before February 20 and $30 after that date.

The Healthy Heart Run is brought to you by the Rotary Club of Boca Raton, Runner’s Edge running store in Boca Raton and The YMCA of Boca Raton.

For more information, call the Runner’s Edge at 561-361-1950 or to sign up, go to www.runnersedgeboca.com.

Training for and running this race could help you reach the American Heart Association’s recommendations for physical activity. The recommendation for improving cardiovascular health, according to Heart.org, is doing at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week. You can think of it as 30 minutes a day, five times a week.

Delray Beach Medical Center Awarded for Excellence

Healthgrades awarded the local hospital for its excellence.

Delray Beach-based Delray Beach Medical Center announced January 17 that it is among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for clinical outcomes, or the results of its care.

Healthgrades, an online resource that provides consumers with information about hospitals and doctors, awarded Delray Beach Medical Center 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence.

That puts Delray Medical Center in the top 5 percent, or 258 hospitals, of more than 4,500 U.S. hospitals. And Delray Medical Center is one of only four hospitals to have secured the top spot for 15 consecutive years, according to a Delray Medical Center press release.

“Since the inception of the award 15 years ago, Delray Medical Center has been recognized each year due to the tremendous efforts of our employees and our medical staff,” says Mark Bryan, hospital CEO, in a Delray the press release.

The award translates to these results for local patients. Patients treated at hospitals receiving the distinction from 2013 through 2015 were an average 26.2 percent less likely to die (based on 19 procedures and conditions), than if those patients had been treated in hospitals that did not achieve the honor. More than 160,000 lives could have been saved during the same period if all other hospitals performed at the same level.

“For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 25 percent lower risk of dying from a stroke than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction,” according to the release.

Go moon bathing for a change

iStock_000000067628Medium (1)

Island Water Sports in Deerfield Beach is offering stand-up full moon paddle tours. The 3.5-mile scenic route takes paddlers along the multimillion dollar homes on the Intracoastal, just in time for sunset.

Upcoming dates for the full moon paddles are in February (on the 10 and 11) and each month through December. The tours, which are considered easy paddles but require some endurance, start at 5:30 p.m. from Island Water Sports at 1985 NE 2nd Street, where people joining the tour will be carpooled to the launch.

Registration is limited. The cost is $30 a person, which includes a board rental and a tour guide. Those who bring their own boards, paddles and life vests pay $10. Those who have their own boards should also bring a whistle and white flashlight, but can rent those from Island Water Sports, if needed.

The paddle takes about 1.5 hours.

For more information, go to Island Camps’ website, email info@islandcamps.com or call 954/427-4929.

bethesda heart failure

Bethesda Hospital Site for Nationwide Heart Failure Study

Bethesda Heart Hospital in Boynton Beach is one of 150 research sites in the United States chosen for a study on a state-of-the-art heart failure treatment.

The recent deaths of George Michael, Florence Henderson and Carrie Fisher have put a spotlight on heart health — specifically, congestive heart failure — which occurs when the heart is weakened to the point that it can’t properly pump blood to the body’s cells.

The clinical trial, called DREAM-HF-1, is studying a group of patients who have suffered from congestive heart failure for six months or longer, looking at the use of stem cells to regenerate heart tissue and improve heart function. The treatment involves harvesting stem cells from healthy donors, then injecting those stem cells into study participants’ heart muscles by catheterization.

The aims of treatment are to reduce death and recurring hospitalizations from congestive heart failure, as well as promote physical activity, according to a Dec. 30 press release from Bethesda Hospital.

Those heart failure patients participating in the study will have one stem cell procedure and periodic follow-up evaluations by phone and at Bethesda for about two years.

Healthgrades named Bethesda Health and Bethesda Heart Hospital one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care for 2017, according to the release.

Heart failure patients who want to participate in the study should check with their doctors to find out if they’re eligible. To find out more about the study, call the Bethesda Health Research Center at 561/374-5020.

Top 5 Immunity Boosting Remedies For Flu Season

Have you ever noticed that the “Flu Season” is always around (or right after) the holidays? It is not an accident. Simply put, when we eat sugar, processed foods, excess meats and dairy and drink alcohol, our immune systems get weaker.

According to many sources, including WebMD, sugar in particular can suppress the immune system for days. Combine that with cold weather that requires our bodies to work harder to protect themselves, and we can get a recipe for disaster. In this blog I share my top five immunity-boosting remedies that can help you create a recipe for wellness instead.

VITAMIN C

istock_000000254262small

Vitamin C is one of the most popular ways to boost immunity and probably one of the tastiest. But did you know that it is not only citrus fruits that are rich in it? Strawberries and red bell peppers have high doses of Vitamin C, too. As for traditional favorites such as oranges, I recommend eating an actual orange instead of drinking juice. Did you know that the heat during the pasteurization process can actually kill Vitamin C, leaving you with mostly sugar water?

  • So, if you are feeling under the weather, add fresh oranges and strawberries to your breakfast and include red bell peppers in your lunch and dinner.

GINGER

An all-time favorite of Ayurvedic medicine, ginger is known to heat up the body, break down toxins and kill bacteria. Additionally, it can help move the lymphatic system, which is known as your body’s sewage. When lymph fluid is moving well, your body is able to get rid of toxins that can accumulate from processed foods, alcohol, pollution, pesticides, etc.

  • A great way to include ginger in your diet is by juicing a couple of large roots at a time and adding a few drops of the juice to any regular juice, smoothie or hot water with lemon.

GARLIC

Similar to ginger, garlic is known for its great anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, and I highly recommend eating garlic with the onset of symptoms. However, garlic can be rough on the stomach, so please use the following tip when eating raw garlic: Always eat garlic with something that has fat and never on an empty stomach.

  • My favorite way to eat garlic is to slice it up thin, put it on a piece of gluten-free toast or cracker and top with cashew or almond cheese. If you want, you can put a dollop of pizza sauce on there and voila — you got yourself a lil’ Italian pizza masterpiece!

REISHI MUSHROOMS

Mushrooms close-up, white background

Reishi mushrooms are part of the medicinal mushroom family that is known to help boost immunity. Medicinal mushroom capsules are perfect on the go or when traveling. I particularly like the Mushroom Optimizer by Jarrow Brand that can be found at Whole Foods Market. This product has a 7-mushroom blend that includes Cordyceps, White Wood Ear, Turkey Tail, Reishi, Maitake, Shiitake and Himematsutake.

  • I take 3 capsules each day when I travel as a preventative measure or if I feel I may be catching a cold. I usually feel better within an hour of taking the capsules.

WELLNESS FORMULA

capsules

Finally, I recommend always having the Wellness Formula Capsules by Source Naturals on hand. Here are some of my favorite ingredients in this product that are known to boost immunity: zinc, propolis, elderberry fruit extract, astragalus, garlic, ginger and grape seed extract (there are many more). Because this wellness formula has so many ingredients, it is easy to carry just one bottle and take a few capsules at time.

  • The reason why I recommend capsules is because they are easier to swallow. If you can only find it in tablets, then simply break them in halves or blend them in a blender with a small amount of juice or smoothie that you can drink in a few sips. Just try not to smell this supplement — the cocktail of the natural ingredients in this product creates a very potent scent.

Local Scientists Discover Imbalance Resulting in Premature Aging

Associate Professor Shuji Kishi led the study on the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute. (Photo by James McEntee.)

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Fla., have published a study on zebrafish looking at how premature aging might occur at the cellular level.

In essence, they found that when the spns1 and atp6v0ca genes are in balance, normal cell function occurs. But when spns1 is disrupted it can cause premature aging. The other gene, atp6v0ca, has the power to suppress the degradation of aging. Combined, the genetic disruptions can fight aging, even extend life, according to a Scripps press release.

Cellular degradation or premature aging is also called senescence. It’s the process in which cells stop dividing. It’s also a normal part of aging.

Theoretically, restoring balance could have far-reaching implications—treating disease, including age-associated degenerative diseases. The research by local scientists could also lead to the identification of new genes that impact aging.

Free Exercise Class for Teens During the Holiday

image001-2

Now here’s a way to throw in a little healthy fun for teens who have plenty of off-school time during the holidays. And it won’t cost parents a penny.

Chris Blackburn, a performance coach at the Institute of Performance (IHP), is holding a camp for teens from 8th grade to their senior year in high school. The camp will be held for an hour, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., every day from December 26 to December 30.

Blackburn tells Bocamag.com that the camp is an introduction to using the gym for teens.

“Half of the class will be focused on teaching different equipment available and correct form [and] technique, while the other half will be a 30-minute workout. We will be touching on creating healthy habits and educating the group on the importance of exercise,” Blackburn says. “Class will help dispel the fear and confusion of stepping into a gym for the first time and provide each student guidelines on how to work out safely and effectively.”

The class is limited to 20 teens.

Sign up by calling IHP at (561) 620-9556 or emailing chris@ihpfit.com. IHP is at 1950 NW Boca Raton Blvd., Boca Raton.

Healthy Drinking Options for the Holidays

Holidays are here and that means parties, which usually means drinking. If you don’t want to give up alcohol but would like to learn about the healthiest options to enjoy, then in this blog is for you.

Best alcoholic drinks at the party:

Organic or Bio-Dynamic Red Wine without sulfites added

screen-shot-2016-12-14-at-11-06-21-am

Red wine has the highest level of antioxidants and resveratrol, which has shown to have some heart-healthy benefits. One five-ounce glass contains only 100 calories. Check out the award-winning Coturri Winery that is famous for their Zinfandel. https://www.coturriwinery.com/

Organic or Bio-Dynamic White Wine without sulfites added

One five-ounce glass contains only 120 calories. My favorite kind is the organic award-winning New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc by Kaimira Estate. http://kaimirawines.com/our-wines/kaimira-estate/

Champagne/Sparkling Wine/Prosecco

prosecco_hero

Each glass is usually 3.5-ounces and has 70 calories. Check out Zonin Prosecco Grey Edition. It is 87 percent Glera and 13 percent Pinot Grigio giving this bottle a hint of apples and a light ginger finish. http://www.zoninprosecco.com/

Z-Tips:

  • Drink flavored sparkling water from champagne flutes in between alcoholic beverages to reduce alcohol consumption and stay hydrated. Try raspberry/lemon or the strawberry flavors of Whole Foods Italian Sparking Water.
  • Avoid martinis and instead have your drink on ice. As ice melts, it will dilute alcohol and make your drink less concentrated, therefore easier to process by your system.
  • Substitute dairy milk and cream for almond milk and coconut cream. Plant-based milks are cholesterol free and they offer additional benefits such vitamin E and good-for-you fats.
