Lets face it—a spin class is all about the instructors and the music, and the playlists at Flywheel are created from a collection of music carefully directed by an in-house DJ. Healthy Drinking Options for the Holidays

Holidays are here and that means parties, which usually means drinking. If you don’t want to give up alcohol but would like to learn about the healthiest options to enjoy, then in this blog is for you.

Best alcoholic drinks at the party:

Organic or Bio-Dynamic Red Wine without sulfites added

screen-shot-2016-12-14-at-11-06-21-am

Red wine has the highest level of antioxidants and resveratrol, which has shown to have some heart-healthy benefits. One five-ounce glass contains only 100 calories. Check out the award-winning Coturri Winery that is famous for their Zinfandel. https://www.coturriwinery.com/

Organic or Bio-Dynamic White Wine without sulfites added

One five-ounce glass contains only 120 calories. My favorite kind is the organic award-winning New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc by Kaimira Estate. http://kaimirawines.com/our-wines/kaimira-estate/

Champagne/Sparkling Wine/Prosecco

prosecco_hero

Each glass is usually 3.5-ounces and has 70 calories. Check out Zonin Prosecco Grey Edition. It is 87 percent Glera and 13 percent Pinot Grigio giving this bottle a hint of apples and a light ginger finish. http://www.zoninprosecco.com/

Z-Tips:

  • Drink flavored sparkling water from champagne flutes in between alcoholic beverages to reduce alcohol consumption and stay hydrated. Try raspberry/lemon or the strawberry flavors of Whole Foods Italian Sparking Water.
  • Avoid martinis and instead have your drink on ice. As ice melts, it will dilute alcohol and make your drink less concentrated, therefore easier to process by your system.
  • Substitute dairy milk and cream for almond milk and coconut cream. Plant-based milks are cholesterol free and they offer additional benefits such vitamin E and good-for-you fats.

Five Best Eco-Friendly Holiday Gifts

Did you know that by buying from local and eco-friendly businesses you can create a tremendous change in our community? In this blog I want to share gift ideas that will make your loved ones happy, support our environment and help entrepreneurs who are passionate about making this world truly a better place.

It’s All Good Organics Body Products

This local boutique company hand-crafts fabulous skincare products that are made with wholesome, real ingredients and of course, with love. Here are three great products that make excellent gifts and stocking stuffers. Face Toner – Unlike conventional toners, this one is actually good for your skin as it has no harsh chemicals. It is made with hand crafted organic rose water that softens and rejuvenates your skin while organic witch hazel helps soothe and heal it.

Face Serum – This little bottle of sunshine is made with calendula oil that can be used daily as face moisturizer. And did you know that calendula is known to brighten your skin and help stimulate the production of collagen? Eye Cream – I love this cream because it is rich in vitamins A, D and E and has fabulous skin-loving ingredients. For example, aloe helps hydrate your skin, castor oil helps with the natural production of collagen, shea butter reduces inflammation and carrot seed oil tightens, nourishes and rejuvenates.

Military Hippie Fitness Clothing

This local, Boca-based company makes quality fitness clothing that will last through tough workouts and stay strong during years of wear, giving you better value out of your purchase.

All of their tees, tanks, sweatpants and sweatshirts are made from natural organic cotton, which offers natural benefits like breathability, antibacterial effects, UV protection and biodegradability. Their yoga wear is manufactured with cutting edge sustainable processes that reduce waste and leave less harmful chemicals on your skin and in the environment. They even use recycled polyester for their yoga pants.

And if you think this new line of fitness clothing is boring or earth-crunchy, think again. Their pieces are absolutely gorgeous and fun to wear. And with all honestly, I now wear their yoga pants to lounge around, not just to workout. After all, it feels good to feel comfy and look fabulous!

Hydro Flask Beverage Containers

image2-1

Did you know that plastic water bottles and cups create an enormous damage to our eco system? Instead of buying water, juices or smoothies when you are out, I suggest making your own and carrying them in a fabulous Hydro Flask. This brand has a terrific array of eco-friendly containers that will keep your beverages at their temperature for 24 hours! I tested this by making my smoothie and keeping it in the flask for a day. It stayed perfectly cold.

My favorite is the wide-mouth bottle that is perfect for all drinks, including blended soups. Because this company has so many gorgeous colors and styles, it is easy to pick the perfect one for your special someone.

Who doesn’t want to be a hero and a rock star in their life? If you have someone on your list who is looking to kick butt in the coming year, then check out this inspirational Bracelet made with Black Onyx by Boca’s Electric Picks.

Not only is black onyx great for grounding elevated energy and reducing the intensity of emotions, the “We Are All Heroes and Rock Stars” Guitar Pick on the bracelet will remind you of your amazing capabilities in this world.

Omega 8006 Juicer

If you are looking for a gift that will keep on giving the joy of vibrant health for years to come, then check out Omega 8006 Nutritional Center. What I like about this particular model is that it can juice greens, wheatgrass and fruits without much waste. Pulp comes out pretty dry, meaning that all the liquid was squeezed out. And yet Omega 8006 is also so much more than just a juicer. You can also make sorbets, nut butters or even your own pasta. Talking about versatile! This company is also local and they provide a 10-year warrantee.

Run or bike in the Treads and Trainers for Charity Event

fb_img_1480350317478

Whether you like to run or ride a bicycle, you can do your part this holiday season to make sure local kids in need have access to donated, new bikes and running shoes.

The Treads and Trainers for Charity event, by Fleet Feet Sports Delray Beach and Doghouse Performance Cycling Center, is Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Runners should report to Fleet Feet Sports at 1705 South Federal Hwy., Delray Beach. Cyclists would go to Doghouse Performance Cycling Center at 7815 NW Beacon Square Blvd., Boca Raton.

The event involves individuals or teams of people running or riding during the 12-hour event, for the cause. Fleet Feet has the treadmill and Doghouse has the Computrainer, which is a trainer connected to a computer and TV screen. Cyclists should bring their bikes. If you don’t have one, however, Doghouse has a few on hand.

Each person or team has the goal of raising or donating at least $100 every hour. Team members can participate in one-hour increments or choose to run or bike longer.

The money raised, according to the event’s webpage, goes to buy new bikes and new shoes for children this holiday season.

If you don’t want to ride or run, 10 percent of what you buy in Fleet Feet Sports Delray Beach the day of the event will be donated to the cause.

To sign up, go to: http://www.fleetfeetdelray.com/ctas/buttons/treads-trainers-charity. Or check out the event’s Facebook page.

The Benefits of a Vegan Diet

As a chef and Green Goddess here at Boca Magazine, I am committed to bringing different choices to our readers. Whether you are eating red meat, limiting your animal proteins to seafood or keeping to a strictly vegan lifestyle, we all can agree that eating your fruits and vegetables is highly beneficial for the body. Here are our top 5 reasons why we love vegetarian foods:

  1. Vegan foods don’t have any cholesterol. All fruits and vegetables are naturally cholesterol free, so they won’t clog the arteries. On the contrary, the fiber in fruits and vegetables will help clean out the body.
  1. Fruits and vegetables are the fastest-transient foods, meaning they won’t get stuck in the colon or make you feel weighed down. If you want to feel thin and light, try incorporating more fruits and vegetables in your diet and reducing animal proteins.
  1. Vegan foods promote health and happiness not only for the body but also for the planet. Conventional animal farming takes a big toll on environment and by trying vegetarian way of eating you can decrease your carbon footprint.
  1. Fruits and vegetables give us the vitamins and antioxidants that animal proteins don’t have. In order to survive and thrive, our bodies need vitamins and antioxidants to fight off the free radicals. Plant-based foods provide a plethora of the phytonutrients our bodies need.
  1. Fruits and vegetables can help us decrease cravings for many foods. For example, whole grains, such as rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat, oats and oatmeal can provide the body with good complex carbs and help your body stop cravings for junk food.

If you want to experience the benefits of vegetarian foods, here are three easy recipes!

Free diabetes screenings for November, diabetes month

volunteers-during-diabetes-week020

November is diabetes awareness month and, for the entire month, Palm Healthcare Foundation and the Diabetes Coalition of Palm Beach County have partnered to provide free diabetes screenings and risk assessments in Palm Beach County.

The calendar of free and open-to-the-public screening locations, dates and times, include one in Boca Raton, Monday, November 4 at Boca Helping Hands, 500 NW 1st Court, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., as well as at the C.L. Brumback Primary Care Clinic in Delray Beach at 225 South Congress Ave., Thursday, November 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

And on Diabetes Awareness Day, Saturday, November 12, the Palm Beach Outlets will host an event on a larger scale, from noon to 4 p.m., including free diabetes risk assessments, glucose screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations, Zumba, face painting, goody bags with diabetes information and a Palm Beach Outlet coupon book for those who get screened.

Some 119,000 Palm Beach County residents have been diagnosed with diabetes, 48,000 have pre-diabetes and many more people don’t know they have the disease, according to a press release on the event. The month-long campaign’s goal is to screen 4,000 local people, educate them about their personal risk for diabetes and help them learn about available and affordable resources.

Palm Healthcare Foundation is also a sponsor of Diabetes Month activities that are going on at Tenet Health’s Palm Beach County hospitals, including Delray Medical Center and West Boca Medical Center.

Go to the Diabetes Coalition of Palm Beach County website for more information or call (561) 833-6333.

Boost your Energy with Algae, Plus a Green Smoothie Recipe

green-margarita

As days are getting shorter and Floridians receive less serotonin-boosting sunlight that usual. I hear many clients comment on their energy levels being lower than usual. I find that during the fall and winter seasons people feel more lethargic and as a result experience sugar and caffeine cravings.

One of my favorite ways to boost energy and fight fatigue is algae supplements. There are three types of algaes that I like – Spirulina, Chlorella and Blue-Green Algae. The main difference is in taste and personally I am team Chlorella as it has the mildest taste.

Algae is known as the oldest type of food on our planet and it contains large amounts of nutrients including:

  • Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, E, and K
  • Major and trace minerals
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Chlorophyll
  • Phytonutrients
  • Enzymes
  • Antioxidants
  • Polysaccharides
  • Essential amino acids

Algae can:

  • Build and purify blood
  • Help boost the immune system and promote healthy eyesight, hair and skin
  • Boost energy due to its incredibly high nutrient concentration
  • Provide anti-aging effects on skin, hair and organs
  • Stimulate stem cell release and movement, helping to regenerate damaged body tissue.
  • Help provide a more complete sleep
  • Reduce food cravings

Algae is very absorbable to the body. Around 97% of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes found in blue-green algae are easily absorbed into the system. Most vitamin supplements are only 5-25% absorbable.

The only don’t with the algae, is don’t overdo it. Too much of a good thing can be too much and we urge you experiment with it in moderation. Start with a half-teaspoon (or 2 tablets) of one kind and see how you feel. You can take it alone, blend with a smoothie or mix with coconut water.

If you have any medical issues, please check with your doctor before starting a new food/supplement as it can alter existing conditions. Algae can be a very powerful detoxifier, so please listen to your body and reduce the dose if you feel you detox symptoms are too strong.

Here is a simple green smoothie recipe to get you started:

GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE

1 Frozen Ripe Banana

1 Cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk

½ Cup Frozen Strawberries

½ Teaspoon Chlorella

½ Cup Fresh Spinach

½ Cup Water

Ice (optional)

Blend to a creamy consistency and enjoy!
