Just an hour east of Atlanta, Lake Oconee is where southern charm meets lakeside adventure. I recently spent a summer weekend there, and it’s safe to say this spot has quickly become one of my favorite escapes. Whether you’re planning a family trip, a romantic retreat, or just a little “me-time,” here are five things you’ll want to know before you go.

Pack Smart

When I arrived, I quickly realized how much the weather can change. Warm, sunny mornings meant swimsuits and paddleboards, but by afternoon a light shower rolled through, making me grateful for my rain jacket. Nights by the fire pit called for a cozy sweater while roasting s’mores. Tip: Bring versatile layers, sun protection (hats, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a dry bag for lake days. If you’re into golf, be sure to bring your clubs or rent some at the course. The five championship Lake Oconee golf courses were designed by renowned architects Rees Jones, Tom Fazio, Bob Cupp, and Jack Nicklaus, offering 90 holes of play, custom club fittings by TaylorMade, private instruction—the works. I didn’t make it to the tennis courts but will for sure next time.

Getting There: It’s Closer Than You Think!

One of the best parts? Lake Oconee feels far removed from the city but is only about an hour’s drive from Atlanta. I rented a car, which made exploring nearby trails and towns simple. Once you’re here, you won’t need to leave the lake area often, but it’s nice to have flexibility if you want to pop into Greensboro for a little southern charm shopping.

Where to Stay

A room at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee

I checked into the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, one of the only lakefront Ritz-Carltons in the world, and instantly felt transported. My room overlooked the lake, and walking out onto the balcony at sunrise and sunset was pure magic. Tip: Be sure to visit the spa and fitness center (I loved the morning yoga class) as well as the hidden speakeasy bar, Oconee Cove (be sure to find it and make a reservation!). Families and groups will also love the cottages and residences.

From Sunrise to S’mores

Days start on the water—wake surfing, kayaking, or just jumping in for a swim. My personal favorite moment was an afternoon paddleboard followed by cocktails by the infinity pool (there’s a family pool for kiddos too). And when the sun goes down, the scene shifts to fire pits, fine dining, and that tucked-away speakeasy. Also, there is a Ritz Kids program for kids aged 5-12. Tip: Don’t miss Gaby’s on the Lake for casual lakeside meals and frozen cocktails, Linger Longer Steakhouse for something elevated, and of course, the Ritz’s signature s’mores by the fire, a must-do tradition that’s offered daily.

Plan Ahead

This is one of those destinations where the details make all the difference. Spa treatments, water rentals and golf tee times are best booked in advance. My favorite add-on is the Photography Concierge service—not always a moment the entire family loves (!), but a great way to capture those dreamy family or couples shots by the water. You’ll thank me later!

Overall, Lake Oconee blends luxury with laid-back adventure, and I left feeling both recharged and inspired. It’s the pause and fun we all need a little more of. Whether it’s s’mores by the fire, cocktails by the pool, or sunrise paddleboarding, every day feels a little magical there. Go ready to slow down, soak it in, and savor the southern charm.
