For the 15th year, the Angari Foundation is studying water movement and pollutants in our area’s waters, and the project has expanded to Boca Raton.
The Lake Worth Lagoon Drift Card Study covers the lagoon, Intracoastal Waterway, and other Palm Beach County waters. On May 1 at noon, purple, eco-friendly drift cards will be released into the waters to track their movement. The newest location is Silver Palm Park on Palmetto Park Road, and students from Somerset Academy Boca will be decorating and releasing the cards.
But it doesn’t stop there—this is where the public, or “citizen scientists,” as the Angari Foundation calls us, step in. If you come across a drift card, note the specific location, date, and time found, then take a photo of both sides of the card. Email the information and photos to lagoondrift@angari.org. Keep the drift card.

“It was a natural step to extend south into Boca Raton, especially with strong interest from Somerset Academy Boca and their eagerness to participate in the drift card study,” Laura Jessop, Community Outreach Programs and Education Manager with Angari Foundation, said in a press release.
In past card studies, the drift cards have been discovered from the Hillsboro Inlet to New Smyrna Beach. The foundation posts data from the cards on an interatcive dashboard and map, which can be viewed at angari.org/lagoondrift-data.
