JES Media, the publisher of Boca magazine, dominated at the Florida Magazine Association’s annual Charlie Awards this past weekend, winning an unprecedented 21 awards. The honors validated Boca and its affiliated magazines’ continued standard of quality as the leader in South Florida publishing, with recognition encompassing a spectrum of writing, design, advertising and online/social media categories.

After conducting last year’s Charlie Awards virtually, the FMA returned to an in-person format for this year’s ceremony, which took placed at the Westin in Sarasota. This competition among many categories was its stiffest in years, with the FMA receiving its highest number of entries since 2017—a testament to the strength not just of Boca but of the statewide magazine business to both survive and thrive during a pandemic.

Boca magazine racked up 10 first-place Charlie Awards, including Best Writing: Feature (“Notes From a Kidnapping”), Best Writing: Public Service Coverage (“Single in 2021”), Best Writing: Humor (“Beginner’s Guide to Florida”), Best Writing: Service Feature (“Mangia!”), Best Writing: In-Depth Reporting (“Into the Sunset”), Best Writing: Column (Editor’s Letter), Best Design: Photo Essay/Series (“Into the Deep”), Best Advertorial: Story or Section (“Faces of Home & Design 2020”) and Best Overall: Digital Innovator, for bocamag.com.
