“It’s basically Disney World for horse people.” That’s what our World Equestrian Center tour guide told us as we zipped around the expansive 378-acre property on a golf cart one chilly January day. Located in Ocala, Fla., seeing all that WEC (shortened for those in the know) has to offer equestrian and non-equestrian visitors alike was more than a little mind-blowing. I consider myself pretty well versed in Florida’s family tourism options, but had no clue that a property where you could enjoy fine dining, luxury shopping, a spa…and casually see Olympic jumpers compete in a $100,000 Grand Prix (all in the same day), even existed.

But it does! And it is impressive, especially since WEC only opened to the public at the end of 2020. Time magazine also seems to think so, dubbing them one of 2024’s World’s Greatest Places. Now, WEC is expanding to include a world class Events Center (for weddings and conferences—there is already a little white chapel on property!) in addition to having a massive amount of existing expo space, two hotels, seven-plus restaurants and 26 outdoor and six indoor arenas. It’s no wonder you need a horse…or a golf cart to get around!

World Equestrian Center Accommodations

My husband, daughter and I were invited to experience WEC’s family and pet-friendly The Riding Academy Hotel. Nestled in the heart of the world-class horse show venue, this 390-room hotel is perfect for families, riders, and those who are a big fan of Ralph Lauren-inspired design. With stylish and comfortable rooms and balconies, a large pool and splash pad, as well as easy access to everything at WEC, The Riding Academy Hotel is an ideal spot to relax after a day of watching (or competing in!) top-tier events.

The second hotel on property, The Equestrian, hosts most of the main retailers and restaurants on property, in addition to having a slightly more “luxurious vibe”. The hotel’s expansive terrace overlooks the main arena, offering the perfect spot for seasonal food and wine events—or, in our case, a front-row seat to watch equestrian jumpers from all over the world compete for a huge cash prize. We sipped champagne (and for the kids, hot chocolate) and enjoyed an arena-side charcuterie board at their exclusive Grand Prix Reception Experience. This is officially my new favorite kind of sporting event!

Dining Options

Stirrups restaurant

If you or anyone in your family happens to be a foodie, you’re in for a treat. I can’t begin to tell you how impressed I was by the food and beverage offerings at World Equestrian Center. I never have *very* high hopes at large resorts, but the team that manages the dining program at WEC gets a gold star in my book! Everything we ate and drank was consistent AND delicious…and there was something for every picky palate in our family.

Here’s a rundown of WEC’s on-site restaurants:

  • Stirrups: located at The Equestrian Hotel, Stirrups offers fine dining in an elegant setting…with a view of the main horse arena. We enjoyed a sit-down brunch here on our last day and it was excellent.
  • The Yellow Pony Pub & Garden: also in The Equestrian Hotel, this gastro lounge features shareable starters, pub fare, traditional draft beers, bourbon and whiskey in a vibrant atmosphere. There was a line waiting out the door as we were leaving!
  • Emma’s Patisserie: this French-inspired bakery located on the ground floor of The Equestrian Hotel offers a selection of over the top pastries and baked goods. Perfect for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up!
  • Filo’s Mexican Cantina: serving traditional Mexican flavors, Filo’s offers street tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more in a funky dining room and open-air patio. They also host the Grand Prix after party with a DJ on Saturday nights!
  • Miss Tilly’s Lollipops: an adorable sweet shop where specialty ice cream flavors and homemade fudge stand out, along with an array of cookies, confections and coffees.
  • Ralph’s Burger & Sandwich Shop: a popular lunch destination for riders, Ralph’s has a classic, diner-inspired menu featuring yummy burgers, salads and sandwiches, topped off with homemade milkshakes.
  • Viola & Dot’s Italian Kitchen and Pizzeria: we didn’t get to experience this eatery personally during our visit, but guests can design their own salads and pies crafted with homemade dough at this casual spot.

Things to Do

Our visit to World Equestrian Center happened to be a family affair and we discovered that there are plenty of things to do for all ages without having to leave the property.

At both hotels, the pools and splash pads are the perfect spot for families to unwind (weather-permitting, of course). Kids can swim and play while parents lounge poolside with a cocktail in hand—I highly recommend the frozen margarita at The Riding Academy!

For those who love to shop, WEC’s retail scene at The Equestrian Hotel is next-level, offering everything from high-end equestrian fashion to adorable gifts and home decor. My daughter and I especially loved Mr. Pickles & Sailor Bear Toy Shoppe, which had a great toy and craft selection for all ages at reasonable prices.

Grand Prix Reception Experience at The Equestrian

For a little relaxation, my husband and I signed up for a “Stretch & Sip: class at Calluna Spa, where we enjoyed a full-body stretch outdoors (with heaters if needed) followed by a complimentary glass of pinot noir—pure bliss! Next time, I’m adding on a couples massage.

And if you’re visiting on a Saturday night, don’t miss the Grand Prix Block Party, a lively festival with food trucks, live music and free kid-friendly activities like face painting, all leading up to an Olympic-level show jumping event in the arena. And since WEC is massive, renting a golf cart is a fun and easy way to explore the 378-acre property—plus, your kids will love the ride!

Between world-class equestrian events, accommodations, dining and so many family-friendly activities, WEC Ocala is truly a unique destination for parents and kids alike!
