Love stories are not perfect, but they are beautiful as they evolve throughout the years.
That’s what my husband and I discovered during our unexpected anniversary weekend at the newly reimagined British Colonial Hotel in Nassau, a place that has grown but also preserved its historic essence.
When I was invited to cover the property, I was so excited that the trip took place during the weekend of Aug. 16, which marked our 17-year wedding anniversary. The resort is not only beautiful, but it’s the type of timeless escape that gave us the gift of slowing down, celebrating together, and savoring every detail as we explored the expansive property.
It’s a haven in the middle of busy Nassau, a place full of history that offers an authentic, tropical feel and a unique option for a weekend getaway or longer stay.
A Grand Dame Reborn

Known as Nassau’s “Grand Dame,” the British Colonial has seen more than a century of Bahamian history, from glamorous Hollywood moments to generations of visitors drawn to its prime harbor front location. After a $50 million transformation, it now feels both brand-new and wonderfully nostalgic, as it mixes in modern and classic design elements with flair.
When I walked inside the jewel-toned lobby I was impressed with its mahogany woodwork details, bold patterns, and botanical elements that caught my eye. All of that made the entrance feel not only breezy and open, but also upscale. We were greeted and treated like movie stars once the friendly staff opened the doors and it’s obvious as soon as you step in that this is the type of place that feels like you are stepping into the scene of an Old Hollywood film.
I couldn’t help but think how fitting it was to begin our anniversary celebration in a space that embodies both tradition and renewal, a place that promises not only a great stay, but offers an ambiance that will pamper you throughout.
A Private Paradise in the City

One of the most surprising joys of the British Colonial is its ability to feel like an oasis while sitting right in the heart of Nassau. Just beyond the lobby lies a 300-foot stretch of private white-sand beach, as well as two sparkling pools, all offering the chance to have guests enjoy relaxing days by the water.
Visitors can spend days exploring the beach and lounging by the pool, and the resort is a quiet retreat where one can reflect, laugh, and simply be together with loved ones. One of my favorite things to do was grab a cocktail as I lounged and put on some sunglasses to bask in the sun or simply dig into that new romance novel that I had been itching to finish.
What struck me most about the property was how its design feels. Rattan chairs sit beside dark wood furnishings, while bold geometric tile patterns meet vivid, tropical-inspired artwork. Every corner of the hotel seems to honor the Bahamas’ past while celebrating its vibrant present. It isn’t just pretty, it’s personal and carries every detail well, and feels like you are learning about the island’s past while being present in the property.
The hotel’s rooms also boast tropical murals, plush bedding and thoughtful details like a coffee machine for that morning cup to wake you up, and sweeping views that change with the light, a kind of space where we felt both cared for and at home.
Menus and Sips That Tell a Story

If the heart of an anniversary trip is connection, then the soul is often found in the meals you share, and at the British Colonial, dining is an experience all its own.
We fell in love with the variety, from elegant, sit-down dinners to laid-back bites that still felt special. At the Mahogany Club, flavors of the Bahamas shine with a modern twist. Think dishes like pea soup, snapper prepared with flair, and tuna and grits elevated for the fine-dining table. Each plate felt rooted in the island’s traditions but layered with innovation, making it both comforting and exciting.
For a more intimate night, Sakana Noodle & Sushi Bar stole our hearts. Fresh, delicate sushi rolls paired perfectly with warm sake created a meal that was full of flavor. We recommend reservations or to come by early if you don’t have one, since the cozy spot is a table surrounding the chefs with limited seats available.
At Woodes Rogers Tavern, we found ourselves surrounded by live jazz, flickering firelight, and an atmosphere that invited you to linger. And, proven by those inside, it was definitely a popular spot for everyone at the resort. The cocktails here are crafted with the island in mind—bright, inventive, and just the right amount of indulgent, from mojitos to classic martinis and drinks with mezcal, one of my favorite spirits. The bartenders there are knowledgeable and creative, and they made sure to honor our request of sampling some authentic Bahamian rum as we chatted with others
In the morning, we visited the British Colonial Trading Company, where pastries, parfaits and a perfectly brewed cappuccino turned breakfast into a delight rather than an afterthought. Even avocado toast somehow felt like an occasion when paired with such a charming setting—a cozy corner in the lobby where you can relax and lay back before heading out to your next adventure in Nassau.
Strolling, Shopping and Exploring in Nassau

One of the charms of the British Colonial’s location is how easy it is to step outside and explore Nassau itself. Just a short stroll from the property, we wandered through The Straw Market, where vibrant stalls brimmed with handcrafted goods, woven bags, straw hats, and colorful keepsakes. It was alive with energy, with vendors calling out their best deals, the air buzzing with friendly bargaining, and each stall offering something that carried a bit of the island’s spirit home with you.
Beyond the market, nearby shops and boutiques added to the sense of discovery. From local jewelry stores showcasing Bahamian gems to shops offering everything from island wear to duty-free treasures, it felt like a playground for anyone who loves to browse and uncover a deal.
My husband Sebastian and I also decided to visit the John Watling’s Distillery. We both love rum and wanted to enjoy a tour to learn about the brand and its history, which includes scenes being filmed on location for “Casino Royale,” a popular installment in the James Bond franchise. Set on the historic Buena Vista Estate, the grounds are shaded by tropical trees and brimming with charm, making it easy to imagine the centuries of stories rooted there. We wandered through the old estate house, where handcrafted barrels lined the way and the aroma of rum seemed to drift through every room. The experience was equal parts history and craft, watching how small-batch rums are made and tasting them right where they’re bottled.
We ended our visit at the colorful Red Turtle Tavern, sipping cocktails that captured the island’s spirit and raising a toast as we decided to get a flight to enjoy all the rums available. And they were delicious!

A Celebration of Love
By the time we left Nassau, I realized just how much anniversaries are about reflection as much as they are about celebration. Especially those unexpected trips that mix in a bit of work alongside some fun, because honestly, I always feel happy and blessed that I get to have these experiences and then come home to write a story.
The British Colonial, with its elegant rebirth and history is the type of place that always finds ways to feel fresh and new. It was also the perfect backdrop for us to celebrate life as we took a chance to unwind and remind ourselves to relax and step away from stress. And that at times is the best lesson that one gets to take away from a meaningful getaway.
