Basel beckoned yesterday, and I braved the perpetual lockjam of Midtown Miami to report on it. My first stop was the Rubell Family Collection, which just opened a wonderful exhibition titled “American Exuberance” – a survey of the most exciting American modern art from the last several decades. The exhibit includes 190 works from 64 artists; 40 of the pieces were created specifically for this show.

Then, after a brief stop at O Cinema, it was off to Miami’s Independent Thinkers in a warehouse in Wynwood. This has been one of my favorite satellite fairs from the past couple of years, and it showcases only homegrown talent. Honestly, the work here wasn’t as impressive as other years, and not worth the $10 entry charge.

Here is the day/evening in pictures, starting with the Rubell Family Collection. Unlike many Basel specialties that run less than a week, you can still view this show through July 27, 2012.
