Now there are two tropical/Caribbean-themed restaurants on Clematis Street with the debut of Bahama Mama’s (340 Clematis St., 561/659-2912), which has set up shop just a block away from the revitalized Reef Road Rum Bar.
The concept is Florida seafood with a Caribbean flair, which translates into starters like conch chowder and fritters, fried grouper bites with tartar sauce and smoked fish dip, entrees grilled Florida lobster, cracked conch dinner with Bahamian mac’n’ cheese, and pineapple and soy-marinated filet mignon. Desserts include the interesting-sounding “guava duff,” a classic Bahamian preparation that involves baking the fruit into dough, here served with sweet bourbon sauce and coconut.
There’s also a wine list with some surprisingly upscale choices (Far Niente Cabernet, Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay), plus the usual assortment of fancy-pants tropical cocktails.
The decor carries through the tropical theme, with a facade that opens up to tables on the sidewalk, artfully distressed tables and chairs, a large U-shaped bar in the center of the dining room and walls painted with vivid blues, greens and yellows.
