According to the marital cognoscenti, one’s 10th anniversary is best celebrated with a gift made of tin or aluminum. For Boca Black Box (BBB), which is currently celebrating its 10th year of bringing eclectic arts to west Boca, the materials in question are metal and upholstery, as the venue has just replaced its seating array. In response to rising public demand, gone are the red cloth chairs, and in their place are the sleeker and more, let’s say, derriere-friendly black-colored upgrades, with a comfortably sized cup holder in every one. We think this is money well spent!
BBB regulars and newbies are invited to check out the new seating digs; as usual, between its adjacent theaters, the venue has programmed plenty of opportunities in this and all weeks.
This Thursday in the main theater, the Fabulous Boogie Brothers, composed of former tour mates of Dion DiMucci and other oldies acts, will perform a variety of favorites from the ‘50s to the ’70s, from doo-wop to soul and early rock ‘n’ roll. The same night, in the more intimate BOX 2.0 space, magician Remy Connor will tour his latest production “The Road Scholar,” in which he’ll weave personal stories of life as a nomadic entertainer with his impressive illusions.
On Friday and Saturday, the larger space welcomes Erica Rhodes, a comedian with a high voice and smart, deadpan material encompassing themes such as aging, gender and notoriety; she has appeared on “Modern Family,” “Veep” and “New Girl.” At the BOX 2.0, Joselito Dapuppet, a ventriloquist comic with a loyal following on social media and the hip-hop sphere, will perform an “adults only” set.
Sunday rounds out the weekend with the Jersey Tenors, a quartet of inventive and sharp-dressed singers from the Garden State who combine opera classics with soaring takes on tunes from Queen, Journey, Elton John, Jersey favorites Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, and more. BOX 2.0 will serve the area’s Spanish-language audience with a set from comic Andrés López, a standup pioneer in his native Colombia.
