Boca Raton Regional Hospital announced Tuesday that it has received its largest grant in the hospital’s history.

The late Bernard “Bernie” Marcus and his widow, Billi Marcus, donated $32 million to the hospital’s Marcus Neuroscience Institute, which was named in the couple’s honor for their ongoing generosity.

“Their extraordinary generosity has brought invaluable resources to Boca Raton, elevating Marcus Neuroscience Institute as a premier destination for brain and spine care. Thanks to their support, we now offer a program that not only rivals but stands alongside the best in the nation,” Dr. Warren Selman, director and chief medical executive of Marcus Neuroscience Institute, said in a press release.

The monies will be used to expand the Marcus Neuroscience Institute, which will focus on brain health “with programs for Alzheimer’s and other dementias, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative disorders and brain tumors.” It will also help fund 10 new Distinguished Physician Scholars.

This was not the first time that the Marcuses had made a donation to Boca Raton Regional Hospital. In 2020, they donated $15 million to the hospital’s Keeping the Promise campaign, and in 2012, their $25 million donation helped open the doors to the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. The institute has grown year over year, from 360 surgeries in 2015 to nearly 49,000 in 2024.

According to the Marcus Foundation, the couple has donated more than $2.7 billion to more than 500 organizations around the world.

Bernie died earlier this month in Boca Raton, leaving behind a legacy of giving and founding The Home Depot with his business partner, Arthur Blank. The two started the business after they were fired from another improvement center, and today the do-it-yourself brand has more than 2,300 stores across North America.
