For Jett and Luke Justin, making a difference in their community begins with the most important meal of the day. At eight years old, the twin brothers organized their first cereal drive at Calusa Elementary School to benefit Boca Helping Hands and collected thousands of boxes of cereal to fight food insecurity in the community. Seven years later the Justins, now in high school, are taking their nonprofit, Cereal4All, to the national stage.
What began as a hyperlocal initiative to deliver breakfast to those in need and raise awareness about food insecurity is now expanding to Connecticut, Arizona, New York, Nevada, Washington and California, where schools will be organizing cereal drives to benefit local food banks.
“We created Cereal4all to fight hunger around America’s breakfast tables because millions of American families suffer from food insecurity,” says Luke Justin. “Cereal is about breakfast, but it’s also about happiness,” says Jett Justin, “so we were bothered by the reality that millions of families and kids might not have daily access to breakfast and that moment of happiness in their day.”
The Justin brothers have also recently established partnerships with Target, Publix and the Miami Heat to reward donating students, schools and classrooms with gift cards, cereal parties and free tickets to Heat games.
This Spring, Cereal4All hopes to collect 3,000 pounds of cereal during its annual drive and donate them to Boca Helping Hands to deliver more than 30,000 bowls of cereal to breakfast tables across the community.
