Play Ball! In honor of Boca Raton Day on Aug. 11, our very own Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer was invited to the pitcher’s mound at LoanDepot Park.

Donning jersey number 19, the mayor joined the elite league of left-handed pitchers when he threw out the first pitch to the baseball team’s mascot, Billy the Marlin. We might need him out there again, because the Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 7-6.

Even better? It was on Singer’s birthday.

It’s a baseball tradition to invite local dignitaries and community members, as well as celebrities, to throw out the honorary first pitch to kick off a game. On MLB Opening Day in March, Brazilian soccer player Neymar did the honors, and in June, Miami local and SNL cast member Marcello Hernandez threw out the first pitch.

Singer had another chance to tap into America’s favorite pastime when he participated in the Mayor’s PLAYBALL program this month, inviting local children to get out and play baseball at the Spanish River Athletic Complex. The mayor was joined by students and athletes from Lynn University; the nationwide event is a partnership between the MLB and the United States Conference of Mayors.
