A local elementary school is proving that kids as young as kindergarteners can make a difference.

For the 15th year, the kids of Calusa Elementary School in Boca Raton are competing to raise money as a part of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s signature shaving event. Students also volunteer to shave heads or to shave their own heads in solidarity with kids going through cancer treatments. If long enough, the hair can also be donated to make wigs.

Community members, such as police officers and volunteer hairdressers, have also gotten involved over the years. The foundation raises money to support families with children diagnosed with cancer.

Calusa Elementary teachers Jamie Kshonz and Joanne White have organized the event for the last 15 years, helping the school raise more than $600,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Recently, Kshonz was nominated for the 2026 Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce’s Giraffe Awards.
