When Susan Phipps says cheese she isn’t kidding.

The one-time event planner turned fromage fanatic who had a “life-altering experience” at an Atlanta cheese shop some 18 months ago has just opened the fruit of that experience: a cute little shop in Fort Lauderdale called Cheese Culture—a Whey of Life (813 Las Olas Blvd., 954-629-5800).

The shop carries about 90 artisanal cheeses from around the world, including such notable American cheeses as Cabot cheddar and Beehive’s gouda-style cheese that’s coated in lavender. Phipps says she hopes to get the selection up to 150 different cheeses, constantly rotating them in and out to keep offering new choices.

Her shop also carries a variety of cheese-related products, from cheeseboards to fondue sets, as well as “gourmet” items ranging from olive oils and vinegars to cured meats and paté to boutique wines and about 30 craft beers. Salads, panini and other deli-type foods are available to eat in or take out.

And if you’re looking to be a cheese whiz, Cheese Culture offers monthly classes that cover everything from fromage basics to cheese-wine pairings.
