The coronavirus pandemic has continued to impact residents of Boca Raton and surrounding areas in previously unthinkable ways. Here are some of the most important updates from another week of developments.
- The City of Boca Raton issued a “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order, which will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, March 28.
- The City of Boca Raton, Mayor Scott Singer, and the Boca Raton Police department implored boaters not to gather in large groups in Lake Boca last weekend.
- In response, Palm Beach County closed all boat ramps and marinas, and banned recreational boating.
- Many restaurants in Boca Raton and throughout greater Palm Beach County have stayed open to provide delivery and take-out services to customers even as social distancing requirements have closed dining rooms. Click here for a list of venues that are still open for business.
- Activity in Boca Raton slowed down to a near-halt early in the week, and new safety measures were implemented in Boca and Delray in response to COVID-19.
- The City of Boca Raton issued an emergency order on Tuesday to close all nonessential retail and commercial businesses.
- The Boca Raton Resort & Club suspended all operations until June 1 in response to the ongoing crisis.
- Layoffs continued to mount in Boca Raton as a result of closures due to the pandemic, with the Palm Beach Post reporting 111 layoffs at the Waterstone Resort and 41 layoffs at the Boca Raton Hilton Suites.
- Students in Boca Raton spoke to Boca magazine about the impact that extended school closures are having on them.
- Galleries and art museums in South Florida began to offer digital tours as patrons began to stay home in self-quarantine.
- City Watch writer Randy Shultz explored the impact that the coronavirus is having on local restaurant owners, and spoke to Boca Raton Regional Hospital about its preparation measures as the number of cases in Palm Beach County continues to climb.
- As of this writing, the number of confirmed cases in Palm Beach County has ballooned to nearly 200, with three deaths, the Palm Beach Post reports.
