These days, food trucks are the hottest thing in the restaurant business since the invention of, well. . . food. They’re huge in Miami, starting to get some play in Broward, but so far they haven’t made the trek up I-95 to our little corner of paradise.
Until now. Former movie and TV caterer and private chef Rick Simek and culinary school grad Mary Cheatham are rolling out the county’s first upscale kitchen on four wheels. Dubbed Curbside Gourmet, the $100,000 truck, outfitted in Miami, makes its quiet debut (“soft opening,” in restaurant parlance) this week at Rybovitz Marina in West Palm Beach.
West Palm, in fact, will be Curbside’s home base for the foreseeable future. Simek and Cheatham plan to park it in four different locations during the day, serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon munchies. We’re not talking “roach coach” here though. Curbside’s owners are going local, fresh, organic and healthy, using greens from produce purveyor to the stars, Swank Farms, as well as all-natural poultry and grass-fed beef.
Regular menu items include a Swank Farms salad, crabcakes with lemon-tarragon aioli, buttermilk-fried chicken sandwich, mojo pork or fresh “catch of the day” tacos, hand-cut fries, a breakfast burrito and, of course, a thick, juicy burger. Even better, everything but a trio of crabcakes is under 10 bucks.
