Birthday Party Celebrating Carter G. Woodson, father of Black History Month

In collaboration with the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASALH) of South Florida, the Spady is celebrating the birthday of the father of Black History Month, Mr. Carter G. Woodson. Families are invited to enjoy birthday cake, games and free festivities on the Spady Museum campus. All ages are welcomed!

Born on Dec. 19, 1875, Woodson was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate from Harvard and dedicated his career to the field of African-American history and lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide institution. In 1915, he helped found the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which later became ASALH; the following year, he established the Journal of Negro History, a scholarly publication. A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., he also wrote many historical works, including the 1933 book, “The Mis-Education of the Negro.”
