Lynn University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in drama program will present five showings of Clybourne Park Dec. 5–7. The student-run show examines issues of racism and gentrification in two acts set 60 years apart and aims to open dialogue in the community about issues that affect society today.Act 1 takes place in 1959, as white community leaders try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act 2 is set in the same house in the present day, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. Written by Bruce Norris and the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, the show is a spin-off of Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun.
The production is directed by Drama Program Coordinator Adam Simpson, who will join cast members alongside visiting professor and Tony Award winner Becky Timms—assistant choreographer for Broadway’s Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Following the 10 a.m. performance on Dec. 7, guests can also attend a talkback alongside Assistant Professor Carrie Simpson and Distinguished Professor of American Studies Dr. Robert Watson.
