This Sept. 11 marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York City, as well as attacks in Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, and Florida Atlantic University is hosting a special stair climb to commemorate the anniversary.
The stadium stair climb fitness challenge will be hosted on Sept. 11 at Flagler Credit Union Stadium at FAU, 777 Glades Road in Boca Raton. A memorial service will start at 8 a.m. outside of Gate 1 (southwest side of the stadium). There will be special guest speakers during the ceremony, including FAU President Adam Hasner.
At 8:46 a.m., the time that the first airplane hit the towers, the stair climb will begin. Participants will climb 10 rounds of the 2,050 steps, symbolizing the 110 floors ascended by first responders in the World Trade Center towers. Stair climbs and “tunnel to tower” runs have been hosted across the country on the anniversary of 9/11 each year, paying tribute to the first responders who ran through the tunnels to Manhattan and up the stairs of the World Trade Center to rescue victims.
