Last week’s gathering of “gourmet” food trucks in Boca Raton was not only successful beyond its organizer’s wildest dreams but was one more indication that the local food scene is growing ever more diverse and sophisticated.

As many as 2,500 people showed up at Boomers entertainment complex for last Wednesday’s Gourmet Truck Expo, the creation of Boca Internet guru Jochen Esser. The overwhelming (and largely unexpected) response jammed traffic on Airport Road, flooded the parking lot of the Cinemark Theater next door, and resulted in waits in line of up to an hour for a bite of food from the 20 or so trucks that parked in the Boomers lot.

“I was definitely surprised” at the turnout, Esser said, which apparently also exceeded expectations of the food truckers themselves, several of whom ran out of food long before the event was over.

But never fear, there will be more, probably again at Boomers sometime later this summer, and in other locations around the county. Esser said he’s already been contacted by companies wanting to host another convocation of eager eaters, which could occur as soon as next month.

One word of advice. Get there early, as soon as the event starts, otherwise you’ll wind up like me, trudging home and gobbling a sandwich after expiring from food truck waiting line fatigue.
