It’s finally feeling like Florida fall outside, which means we’ll be dressing up for Halloween before we know it! I’m only on year 4 of celebrating this holiday as a Boca mom, but I’ve picked up quite a few tips on how to survive and make the most of Halloween and all of its local family events and activities.

For example, Tip No. 1: Make sure your child has multiple costumes. God forbid you post or snap the same one twice at an event on social media! Or Tip No. 2: Paint your pumpkins versus carving them. They’ll fare so much better in the South Florida humidity and you can even repurpose them as decorations for Thanksgiving!

Here is my personal guide to giving your Boca kid the ultimate Halloween with minimal parental aggravation…

Instead of trick-or-treating at the mall…Try trick-or-treating at Sugar Sand Park

Sugar Sand Park will be hosting a FREE indoor Trick or Treat Trail among other spooky activities at their annual Shriek Week event this year. Tables are hosted by local businesses on multiple nights and all candy is required to be wrapped, so there’s no worry about safety. For details, dates, times and costs visit .

Instead of shopping at a busy costume store… Try getting your daughter’s Halloween-wear at a local boutique

‘Shop local’ is my motto! Instead of blowing your child’s costume budget at a chain store, why not check out the Halloween selection at ? This adorable store has Halloween/fall outfits for all ages (even some boy options!). The staff will even help your child make a custom Elsa or Halloween tutu on site (for a small fee). Shopping and a fun activity all in one place!

Instead of braving Bedner’s for your fall family photos… Try a more intimate pumpkin patch

Fall photos of your Boca kids (preferably dressed up) are a must these days. Hey- if you spring for multiple costumes, you might as well capture photographic memories of your children while they’re still small and cute! But Bedner’s on a weekend? Amateur parent move—that place is crazy busy! Book your photographer (I love ) and head to St. Ambrose in Deerfield Beach or The Girls in Delray. They won’t be nearly as crowded, so you can pick up your pumpkin and take your photos in relative peace.
