Fresh-baked breads, cookies, cakes, pies, muffins, scones and more fill to almost overflowing the tiny shop in downtown Lake Worth now home to Matthew Lamstein and Jacqueline Moore’s new J Street Bakery (9 N. J St., 561/533-0150).
The pair met about a year ago trying to launch a bakery in another location that eventually fell through, but when the former site of Dolce Vita wine shop became vacant they snapped it up, decorated it with Lamstein’s sculptural, nature-esque wall hangings and began turning out the breads and pastries that are their specialties.
Lamstein does the breads, small loaves of multigrain inspired by the seminal cookbook from the Tassajara Zen Center in California, as well as sourdough from his own three-year-old culture, mango, cinnamon-raisin, rye and challah. Moore, who developed diabetic-friendly recipes to suit her diabetic husband, does the pastries, many of which are gluten-free and vegan.
Though their current shop is about the size of the average broom closet, the pair has bigger plans, hoping to take over the old Scandia bakery in Lake Worth to increase both the selection and quantity of their baked goods. Taking a short break, they’ll be closed from mid-August until after Labor Day so get in there while you can.
