The Delray Affair is over, signifying the end of the real winter season and, I might add, the end of an era: it was the first one since its inception that did not sell gladioli—which is how it started in the beginning, as a gladiolus festival.  The glad farms are gone now, but the Delray Affair has nonetheless evolved into an enormous citywide event, just as the town itself has reached a whole new plateau in terms of activity.

This upcoming week alone we have the green market this Saturday (they end after Mother’s Day) on S.E. 4th Ave., just south of East Atlantic Ave. This weekend, April 28-29, the Delray Art League Show presents Artists in the Park at Old School Square from 10 to 4:30 p.m. and on May 5, the Arts Garage presents “Jazz Project: Celebrating Latin Culture featuring Sammy Figueroa” at 8 p.m. at 180 NE 1st St. (Call 561/450-6357). And just around the corner is the first of a summer ritual we all love, the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Turtle Walks on select evenings starting May 24.

So, yes, the pace is slowing somewhat, but what better way to enjoy Delray Beach than with a little more breathing room?  Take a long walk this weekend and enjoy life in the slow lane for a change.
