Want to sip and stroll as you shop for groceries? Come next summer, you can.

Lucky’s Market, where guests are invited to grab a pint of beer or a glass of wine before they shop, will soon be opening its first Palm Beach County store. The business will be one of the anchor stores at Uptown Boca Raton, breaking ground this month, and will be joined by Silverspot Cinema, Chick-fil-A, BankUnited and other businesses.

Uptown Boca Raton, a 38-acre, $200 million space on Glades Road east of 441, is expected to be complete in summer 2019. But the plaza will not only be for retail space—456 multi-family luxury apartments are in the works as well for completion in early 2020.

Other businesses in the immediate area include Bed Bath & Beyond, Regal Cinemas, Home Depot, DSW, Dick’s, Bank of America, Publix and more.

Lucky’s Market is located in 11 states with a growing presence in Florida—locations includes Coral Springs, Plantation, Oakland Park and others throughout the Sunshine State. Selling organic and natural foods, the casual market also has an apothecary, bakery, a kitchen with prepared food, beef market, and wine and beer tastings.

Uptown Boca Raton is a joint venture among Giles Capital Group, Rosemurgy Properties, Schmier Property Group and Wheelock Street Capital.

“We are pleased to close on the property and to have the opportunity to deliver to West Boca Raton a lifestyle and entertainment project that will serve as a much-needed destination for the local community,” said Brian Schmier, CEO, Schmier Property Group.

I was expecting Trader Joe’s for this side of town, with Lucky’s Market taking the hhgregg space. Apart from the anticipated Whole Foods at Clint Moore and 441, does West Boca need more retail? Yes, a lot of shopping centers and their space are approaching the end of their useful life and should be redeveloped, or everything will start to look like Broward County. Target has an empty former garden center, Babbies”R”Us and Golfsmith are closed, and I expect Best Buy and Office Depot/Max to follow. Hell, even Regal Shadowood could close, as it was shown in the past that two theaters can compete across from each other like Walgreens and CVS. While this site should have been redeveloped years ago, it should be more residential, fitting with the character of the neighborhood. The architecture is AWFUL, too modern and almost like college dormitories. Something more Mizneresque would be more suitable. Also, the site planning is rather SAD! It’s everything we don’t want Midtown Boca to look like, with pathetic street and pedestrian interaction, and of course more bottlenecks.
