Over the last three decades, the Walk of Recognition has become affectionately known as Boca Raton’s own Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in its 29th year, they’re going big.
This year, coinciding with Boca Raton’s centennial, the slate of honorees will grow to 25 Luminaries of the 2000s to recognize contributions from the early aughts. Rather than a single granite plaque for each person, per usual, this year a special centennial plaque will be installed at Mizner Plaza at Royal Palm Place.
“The Walk of Recognition has always been about honoring those who shape our city’s story,” Mary Csar, executive director of the Boca Raton Historical Society, said in a press statement. “By recognizing 25 honorees this year, we are celebrating the breadth of vision, dedication, and impact that have carried Boca Raton into its second century.”
Typically only a handful of people are honored; last year, five people were honored. Nominees are people who have made significant contributions to the Boca Raton community in the areas of education, health care, civic service, arts & culture, business, nonprofit leadership, and other arenas. In 1997, the Walk of Recognition’s inaugural year, the honorees included community icons such as Countess Henrietta de Hoernle, Gloria Drummond, Florence Fuller and Hildegarde Schine.
The Walk of Recognition was created and is sponsored by Marta and Jim Batmasian.
