Tips for a healthy holiday season

Dr. Brian Clement, the director at Hippocrates Health Institute and a leading authority on vegan, living, enzyme-rich diets, offers “The Fit Life” readers tips for a healthy holiday season:

Eat before the Party. Before you head out for the big bash, make yourself a super-healthy salad containing mostly sprouts like alfalfa, mung beans, buckwheat, sunflower, fenugreek and other sprouted greens, and some vegetables. These nutrient-dense foods will provide an extraordinary amount of nutrition that will lower your appetite and sustain your body’s energy, making you less likely to take that second or third trip to the cookie display.

Schedule Your Exercise. Holidays in general are hectic, and you’ll be tempted to bag the trip to the gym to open up time for other stuff.  So schedule your workouts just as you would any other appointment. Exercise not only decreases your stress level, it keeps your skin looking good.  Your skin is your body’s largest organ and sweating at least three times a week helps your body release the toxins you may have accumulated the night before.

Think “Holiday Hydrate.” For every pound you weigh, you should consume .5 ounces of water.  (If you weigh 130, for example, that’s 64 ounces or two quarts.) During the holidays, our calendars are filled with lots of shopping, gift wrapping and holiday parties, so it’s easy to overlook one of the most important elements in staying healthy.

Prevent Getting Rundown.  Besides adequate rest and taking it easy, twice a day drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with 8-12 oz. of water. This soothes the stomach, fights colds and gives you an incredible boost of energy.
