Though it hasn’t opened to the public since March of 2020, the Crest Theater at Old School Square has been far from empty. On the contrary, it has a maintained a lavish quarantine project: A $1.5 million facelift, funded by a private donor, which will transform the historic building into a fully 21st century performing-arts venue.

When the building reopens for live performances, patrons will experience a modernized box office system, advanced guest service technology, a redesigned lobby bar and additional pop-up bars throughout the property. Twenty-five seats will be added to the reconfigured theater, which will boast 81 VIP seats and five front-row tables for an intimate cabaret-style experience.

So it’s fitting that the Crest Theater’s first show scheduled for the 2022 winter season is the first in its Broadway Cabaret series: Shoshana Bean, whose credits include “Wicked” and “Funny Girl,” will kick off the season programming on Jan. 17-18, 2022. The series, announced late last week, also includes performances by Norm Lewis (Jan. 31-Feb. 1), Linda Eder (Feb. 14-15), John Lloyd Young (March 7-8), Rachel Bay Jones (March 14-15), Mandy Gonzalez (March 28-29), Lucie Arnaz (April 11-12) and Telly Leung (April 25-26).

In another sign of the return of “normal” programming at the Crest is the venue’s highly anticipated MusicWorks series, featuring top-shelf tribute artists as well as original folk and Americana singer-songwriters in intimate settings. That schedule includes:

  • Nov 5- The Boxtops
  • Jan 26 – Corky Laing’s Mountain
  • Feb 2 – Brothers Again – The Music of the Allman Brothers
  • Feb 16 – Tapestry: The Songs of Carole King
  • Feb 23 – An Evening with Livingston Taylor and Jonathan Edwards
  • March 2 – Broken Arrow: The Music of Neil Young
  • March 9 – Stayin’ Alive: One Night of the Bee Gees
  • March 16 – Loudon Wainwright III
  • March 23 – Peter Asher
  • March 30 – Turnstiles: The Music of Billy Joel

Though individual tickets will not go on sale until Oct. 1, Old School Square will open its membership program next Monday, June 28, allowing subscribers early access to the most plum seats. For more information on Old School Square, call 561/243-7922 or visit oldschoolsquare.org.
