Forget mattresses and refrigerators. For this year’s Labor Day shopping, why not own a piece of theatrical history?
From Friday through Monday, Costume World in Pompano Beach will host its annual Once-a-Year Blowout Sale, extending its hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day for visitors to peruse treasures at discounts of 20 to 60 percent. The sale encompasses both the commercial and collectible markets, from Halloween costumes and accessories (K-pop, anime, and Dolly Parton-inspired looks are on trend this year) to items worn by stage and film stars, including wardrobes from 1994’s The Flintstones film and Broadway’s Beautiful—The Carole King Musical. Aspiring pop divas, take note: Sequined marvels from Bob Mackie’s The Cher Show will also be available to purchase.
“Theater lovers, film buffs, treasure hunters, and pre-Halloween shoppers alike are getting a rare opportunity to own selections from our renowned collection,” said Marilynn Wick, Costume World founder and CEO, in a statement. “After more than 50 years of collecting, it’s time to make room for what’s next. This Mega Sale is our way of sharing pieces of theater and film history with the people who will love them most, while we get to work bringing in new collections for Costume World’s future.”
Costumes are only one element of the sale’s reach. Collectibles as varied as rare books and manuscripts, vintage vinyl records, authentic military uniforms, pieces of armor and furs will also be available. The sale continues through all of September, but for the best selection, shoppers are encouraged to visit this weekend.
Costume World, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, houses the largest collection of costumes and accessories in the United States, spanning 45,000 square feet and housing ensembles from more than 35 Broadway productions and more than 1.5 million individual pieces.
