It’s been a long week. Here’s a short recap of some fun South Florida stories.

The Boca Bash Litterbugs Are Famous

As Ron Burgundy would say, “That escalated quickly.” The much-loathed annual boating event on Lake Boca was thrust into the national spotlight when a video of Boca Bashers dumping cans of trash into the ocean went viral. The litterbugs were quickly identified and made famous, leading to the alleged perpetrators shutting down their Instagram accounts and turning off Google reviews for the boat owner’s business. A statement on Monday from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission promised that charges for the teenaged suspects were “imminent.” The video was taken by Wavy Boats and shared on the videography company’s Instagram where it has amassed more than 100,000 likes and 28,000 of the most frightening comments imaginable to anyone dumb enough to dump their trash in the ocean.

The Square Rebrands

The downtown West Palm commercial hub known by the City as The Square and by everyone else as CityPlace, has been officially renamed as CityPlace. CityPlace has gone by many names over the years, including CityPlace, Rosemary Square, and The Square, but will henceforth be known as CityPlace. Catchy, no? A social media post on Wednesday announced the monumental rebranding, which served as a shocker for many who had never known CityPlace by any other name.

DeSantis Kisses the Ring

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Gov. Ron DeSantis has once again aligned himself with former President Donald Trump. The two met in private in Miami last weekend, where they, according to a caps-locked Truth Social post from Trump, discussed the future of Florida and DeSantis’ support for Trump in the upcoming presidential election. Taking a page out of the Ted Cruz playbook of kissing the ring despite repeated personal attacks, DeSantis, referred to by Trump at various times as a slew of nicknames including “Ron DeSanctimonious,” no doubt still has one eye on D.C. following his failed presidential run.

Florida Bans Lab-grown Meat

Speaking of Gov. Ron DeSantis, this week the governor signed a bill into law that bans and criminalizes the manufacture and sale of lab-grown, or cultivated, meat. In a statement, the governor said “Florida is fighting back against the global elite’s plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs.” Maybe now that this blow has been dealt to the “global elites” we can move on to solving the insurance crisis, the rental crisis, or the affordability crisis.

Fort Lauderdale Ranked in Top 100 Places to Live in the U.S.

Yeah, you read that right. Ranking website Livability recently released its list of the top 100 places to live in the U.S., and somehow Fort Lauderdale made the cut. Placement on the list is determined by “a combination of affordability, opportunity and quality of life factors,” and Fort Lauderdale, where the cost of living and housing is 18% and 55% higher, respectively, than the national average, merited inclusion. Apparently a major factor in Fort Lauderdale’s placement on the list is its outdoor life, which was clearly experienced by someone who’s never visited in August.
