It’s two days away and it already feels like the real May Day—only better. The “Twilight in the Garden” party is a premier fundraising event for the Delray Beach Historical Society—held on the tree-shaded grounds of the Society just as dusk is thinking about reaching across the early summer sky.

This Saturday, May 6, the Society expects 300 guests “to meander along the one-acre Heritage Garden pathways adorned with white lights and fresh garden decor to visit custom-built vignettes, hosting Delray’s finest and favorite restaurants offering delicious food and beverages.”

Naturally, the Society’s history exhibits will be open, the bungalow will house a silent auction, and there will be live music on the north lawn until 10 p.m. An open bar will be stationed on the patio.

Participating restaurants and purveyors include Café Luna Rosa, Farmer’s Table, Brulé Bistro, Jimmy’s Bistro, Dada, Ceasar’s BBQ, City Oyster, Elisabetta’s, Warren Delray, Hopportunities, Two Fat Cookies, Deke’s in Delray, and other contributing chefs.

Historical Society Board President Mike Cruz says “This is for a great and vital cause—saving and preserving our history for future generations… We hope everyone will come out and support us.”

What I like about this event is that it feels less like a fundraiser and more like a great old-fashioned house party on your front lawn. It has that magic I still associate with the heart of the town: people who have lived here for generations mixed with newcomers who want to be involved, people with stories, easy conversation. The grounds are beautiful, the small town vibe infuses everything, the food is good. Easy and real and fun. And celebrating the very real and precious history of Delray. I don’t know about you, but I need a dose of real about now; I’ll see you there.
