Next week the biggest larger-than-life ladies luncheon I’ve ever been to strikes again: the Junior League of Boca Raton 2011 Woman Volunteer of the Year (WVOY) luncheon—now in its 24th year. When I say big, I mean BIG—in the past, there have been 1,000 some attendees—all dressed to the nines, all animated (some more than others, depending on who’s at the champagne tables!) and all honoring some of the unsung heroes in our community. Next Thursday, October 6 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, the Junior League will salute 22 nominees from various non-profit organizations throughout Palm Beach County. This luncheon is one of the community’s signature events—it’s one that everyone goes to, and everyone waits for. We would like to take this opportunity to send our own special thanks to the remarkable women who will be honored next week.

This year’s nominees are Karen Lynne Asher, American Cancer Society; Marti White, American Red Cross Palm Beaches-Treasure Coast Region; Tina Snider, Best Foot Forward Foundation; Anne Henderson, Boca Ballet Theatre; Roberta Valmond, Boca Helping Hands; Lu Lu Thomas, Boca Raton Historical Society; June Gelb, Boca Raton Museum of Art; Sandy Sokolof, Boca Raton Police Services Department; Dr. Marla W. Dudak, Caridad Center; Holli Rockwell, Caring Hearts Auxiliary; Diana Rivellino, Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League; Linda L. Behmoiras, Florence Fuller Child Development Centers; Jackie Reeves, Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce; Ann Marie Barry, Home Safe Foundation; Paula Adams, Hospice by the Sea, Inc.; Robin Deyo, Junior League of Boca Raton; Mary-Ann Knaus, Milagro Center; Marilyn Nelson, National Society of Arts & Letters/Boca Raton-South FL Chapter; Lorry Herdeen, Soroptimist International of Boca Raton/Deerfield Beach; Lisa Guarini, SOS Children’s Villages–Florida; Linda Gunn, Spirit of Giving Network; Caron Dockerty, Treasures 4 Charity.

In addition to honoring the community’s most dedicated volunteers, the luncheon also raises money for the Junior League’s many community initiatives; last year it raised more than $162,000.

Sponsors for the luncheon are The Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Saks Fifth Avenue (who is doing the fashion show) and Mercedes-Benz of Delray as well as the GEO Group, Cendyn, The Rendon Center for Dermatology & Aesthetic Medicine, Boca Raton Magazine, and Atlas Party Rental.
