As we detail in the Hometown Hero section of our November-December issue, Boca Ballet Theatre Co-Artistic Directors Jane Tyree and Dan Guin have dedicated their lives to arts advocacy in the Palm Beaches. Read below for more of their tireless contributions to culture, dance and beyond.
DAN GUIN
Executive Director and Co-Artistic Director of Boca Ballet Theatre, Dan Guin is a native of North Carolina, where he trained and graduated from the prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts. He has utilized his background in ballet and jazz in both concert and commercial work, performing professionally with the Orlando Ballet, Lyric Opera Ballet of Chicago, Delta Festival Ballet, South Carolina Ballet Theatre, Ballet Michigan, and Gus Giordano’s Jazz Dance Chicago.
He is well known as a choreographer and teacher throughout the United States. Dan has choreographed both original contemporary and classical works, including The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet, Graduation Ball, Boca Baroque, Coppélia and Ella Sang. He also has staged full-length versions of ballet classics such as La Bayadère, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and Swan Lake. These productions have featured internationally renowned ballet stars, including New York City Ballet’s Wendy Whelan, Daniel Ulbricht and Nikolai Hubbe, now the Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre’s Amanda McKerrow, Marcello Gomes, Julie Kent and Jose Manuel Carreño.
In addition to his role as artistic director, executive director, teacher and choreographer at Boca Ballet Theatre, Dan has taken on a leadership role in the community as the co-founder and current chairperson of the Boca Raton Cultural Consortium. In May 2013, Dan was awarded the Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts, receiving the Performing Arts Educator Prize for his artistic achievements and his ongoing commitment to enhancing culture in Palm Beach County.
JANE TYREE
Boca Ballet Theatre’s School Director and Co-Artistic Director, Jane Tyree was born in Florence, Alabama. She began her training with the Birmingham Civic Ballet and continued training at the University of Alabama dance department, where she received a B.A. in Arts Management and Dance Performance. Her professional experience includes the Lyric Opera Ballet of Chicago, South Carolina Ballet Theatre/Ballet Michigan, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Delta Festival Ballet, Wisconsin Ballet Theatre and Southern Ballet Theatre of Orlando.
In addition to her performance career, Jane was the executive director, scholarship director and ballet instructor for the internationally acclaimed Gus Giordano Dance Center in Chicago, and she has also served on the faculty of Lou Conte Dance Studio, South Carolina’s Columbia College, David Puszh Dance Company and the Joseph Holmes Dance Institute.
Since 1991, when Boca Ballet Theatre was founded, Jane has vigorously put her heart and soul into her work, bringing her vast experience as a talented performer and teacher to the stage and classroom alike.
Jane and her husband Dan were awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by the National Society of Arts and Letters and were recognized by the Boca Raton Historical Society by Boca Ballet Theatre’s inclusion on the Boca Raton Walk of Fame.
