My camera roll is always bursting at the seams after a trip, but especially after a trip that I’ll be writing about for the magazine. You never know when you’ll need to remember that there were CDs hanging from the trees at the cacao farm or the gradient of a mural dotted with bronze bird sculptures.
It’ all these little details that bring a destination to life for our readers, and now that our story about my trip last fall to Barranquilla and Santa Marta is out in our April issue of Boca magazine, I wanted to share a few moments that didn’t make it into the story.

From left, being put to work at the hand-crank to grind cocoa beans into a smooth chocolate, and our guide Eduardo shows us the behind-the-scenes of running the coffee farm, Finca La Candelaria. Traveling to the top of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Minca was precarious—more on that in our print story.

At left, we had the opportunity to talk to Lesvia Jimenez, who has been weaving iraca palm into beautiful homewares since she was 5 years old. I ended up taking personal orders from friends at home who wanted to purchase her beautiful wares. At right, a massive art tribute to Jesus outside of the Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán in Usiacurí.

The homes of the residents in Usiacurí created a living mural, with the local birds painted on roofs by a local artist.

A trip to Barranquilla wouldn’t be complete without taking a photo by the Shakira statue! It was dedicated to her in 2023 and was modeled off her “Hips Don’t Lie” music video.
