What’s been referred to as a “Mediterranean Chipotle” is now up and running at Boynton Beach’s sprawling Renaissance Commons retail-residential complex.

Zaza’s Fresh Mediterranean (1880 N. Congress Ave., 561/734-1232) reprises the wildly popular Mexican eater’s fast, healthy, casual and inexpensive concept, dishing a variety of Mediterranean-Middle Eastern specialties in a vividly colorful, strikingly contemporary space.

It’s the second local restaurant for proprietor Omar Ammed, who opened Zaza Mediterranean Grill in West Palm Beach several years back. (The restaurant is now closed.) Nothing on the menu of salads, sandwiches, small plates and platters costs more than $10, and it also offers a selection of domestic and imported beers, wines and sangria.

Among the sandwiches are lamb and beef gyros, kofta (spiced and skewered ground beef) and grilled chicken, which can also be had as platters with fries or rice, lentils and crispy onions. Appetizers include hummus, falafel, rice-stuffed grape leaves and the springroll-like Moroccan cigar filled with minced beef, peas and onions and served with tamarind sauce.
