Dr. William Julien has been a vascular specialist providing minimally invasive care for 34 years, proudly celebrating his 25th anniversary this year with his own practice, South Florida Vascular Associates (SFVA). Degreed from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and having completed his Interventional Radiology fellowship at the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, Dr. Julien has performed more than 40,000 procedures with a focus on offi ce-based clinical care. “All our procedures are done through needle punctures into the bloodstream,” he says. “I like to say that I don’t own a scalpel.”

Q. What are the most exciting technologies you employ at SFVA?

A. Many involve embolization. The classic uterine artery embolization has been around for 25 years, but now we’re able to perform similar embolization procedures on other organs, including the prostate, the knee, and hemorrhoids.

Q. It sounds like you’re driven by the desire to reduce operative interventions and hospital stays.

A. All our procedures are done through a small needle puncture into the bloodstream without incisions. I like to say I am allergic to the hospital. As an Interventional Radiologist, we look at surgical procedures and fi gure out ways to perform those in a minimally invasive fashion under image guidance, with minimal sedation required, and with quick recovery—going home the same day. That’s the whole focus of my medical career, and we’re pretty exceptional at that.

Q. How does this affect health care costs?

A. Health care is really expensive, so when you go to a hospital, there are enormous costs. When we do these things in the offi ce, we save the system a lot of money.
