
My friend Prima Creel sent me an invitation to an intriguing event for women: a screening of a 72-minute documentary hosted by Dr. Melody Smith called “Things We Don’t Talk About: Women’s Stories from the Red Tent” on Sunday, April 13 at 3 p.m. at Michael’s Body Scenes.
There is a whole Red Tent movement apparently, centered on empowering women by allowing them to express themselves, share stories, seek comfort in a sacred space loosely fashioned after the notion of a “menstrual tent” where in ancient times, women took refuge while menstruating or giving birth, “and in which they find mutual support and encouragement from their mothers, sisters and aunts.”
I am not sure how red or tented the space will be, but I always like the idea of women coming together to simply talk and laugh, play, get massages, drink tea, take a nap–—any respite from their busy lives and pressure.
