Here Comes the Sun

Don’t sweat it if you missed the recent runway action at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami. We’re here with the scoop on the latest swimwear trends.

The fabulous five:

1. Fringe benefits: Fringed bikini brights are guaranteed stunners. The fringe detail adds a free-flowing texture to the bikini top. Whether you’re on a staycation or busy playing hostess, we’re sure the mercury will rise with this piece. Designer L*Space Audrey has these tops in a variety of colors to choose from. We love this Tiffany Blue, but you can choose from a pink, a neutral brown or black.

2. Making the cut: Cutout swimwear is all the rage this season. Dubbed as the monokini swimsuit, this is a trend recycled from the roaring ‘20s. Although some sources say the “monokini” was initially a term used for a topless bathing suit, most designers today are liberally using “monokini” for a one-piece. TheRosa Cha Swim Belted Monokini Swimsuit from Saks Fifth Avenue if worth a look because it combines the vintage corset look with the cutout trend.

3. Ruffle, ruffle: You guessed it. We saw a lot of ruffles on the runway for tops and bottoms. Soft and feminine, ruffles can definitely spruce up your swim and sun outing. Team with a beach hat and some rimmed sunnies for the added dash of glamour. Designer Keva has this trend showcased in a sweet blush pink. (Psst, pink is making a huge come back in the seasons ahead, my
forecaster friends inform me).

4. High there: High-waist bottoms are back in business. Vintage meets modern in this double-hued, retro to metro Camilla & Marc bikini. The good thing about being a Floridian is having an extended summer, so we can continue to dazzle in tandem with the sun.

5. Of bandeaus and cover-ups: The bandeau bikini is making a big splash this year in prints, color-blocks, animal prints and even paisley like this one from J.Crew that we liked. Though not for everyone, this trend does invite the possibility of teaming a print with a sheer neutral shirt when you’re not on the sand. This year, cover- ups kept up with overall apparel style in a trend-by-trend match. We saw a lot of uneven hemlines, embellishments, sheers, halters and crochet see this one by Victoria’s Secret in classic white.
