I read like a maniac. In fact, I am just wrapping up Keith Richards’ memoir and loving that he actually remembers the last 40 some years. So it still amazes that one in seven adults in Palm Beach County is unable to read. Which is why I am contemplating dusting off the wheels and joining the April 2 Loop The Lake for Literacy bike ride around Lake Okeechobee.

Cyclists can ride 25 km,  50 km and,  for you maniacs, 100 km or 200 km routes around the southern shores of Lake Okeechobee to raise funds and awareness for the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County.

The lake itself is enough to get me wanting to go–I have been fascinated by it for-e-ver, and you never get to get up close and personal with it.  Most rides begin at Torry Island at the Belle Glade Marina. For example, the 25 km involves about 7.3 miles to John Stretch Park in Lake Harbor and then back. The longer rides go to Clewiston and Moore Haven (and the 200 km gladiators start in Pahokee) but lunch will be Park Avenue BBQ back at the marina.

Sound like fun?  I don’t think you can beat getting close to natural Florida on a dazzling April morning, having a great bike ride and raising money for something as critical as literacy in our own back yard.
