It should come as little surprise to followers of Latin music that Bad Bunny, still the style’s most towering figure, led the pack at last week’s announcement of the 2025 Latin Grammy nominations, with a dozen nods. What might be a surprise, for those not steeped in Latin music, is that Florida Atlantic University’s very own record label is also represented in the list.
Hoot/Wisdom Recordings—student-run and faculty-supervised—has released more than 30 albums from its university-based studio since its founding in 2002. And this year, “Milonguín,” a Hoot/Wisdom recording by Colombian bandoneonist and composer Giovanni Parra and his quintet, received a nomination for Best Tango Album. The honor marks the fifth nomination for FAU professors Alejandro Sánchez-Samper (producer, recording engineer and mix engineer) and Matt Baltrucki (recording engineer and mastering engineer) of the Department of Music in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.
“Milonguín’” is an album that reflects the quintet’s creative exploration of the contemporary tango universe, incorporating the rhythmic and melodic richness of Colombian Andean music,” Sánchez-Samper said, in a statement. “Each of Giovanni Parra’s compositions opens a dialogue between tradition and modernity, showcasing the power of tango as a universal language that connects cultures.”
“Milonguín” is the fifth Latin Grammy nomination for Parra’s quintet, whose relationship with FAU’s Hoot/Wisdom Recordings dates back to its 2015 debut.
You can listen to “Milonguín” on all the major streaming platforms. The winners of the 2025 Latin Grammy Awards will be announced Nov. 13.
